The Office of Field Experiences provides information to student teachers and pre-student teachers regarding professional development opportunities that may be of interest.

Not all of the opportunities below are offered through the Office of Field Experiences. Please contact the numbers provided below if you wish to register.

I. The Use and Implementation of the Graphing Calculator

When:
October 30, 4-6 pm

Where: Old Main 403

This workshop is designed specificaly for math and science student teachers. The New York State Regents Exams require the use of a graphing calculator, therefore, teachers must be able to design curriculum and teach lessons that ensure students can appropriately use the graphing calculator to solve problems. The workshop will emphasize using the graphing calculator as a teaching tool as well. Pre-student teachers in math education are strongly encouraged (and possibly required by course instructor) to attend. Call 888-3289 to be added to the class.


II. Campus Events

Check the Canisius Calendar for a listing of campus events that may be of interest to any student teacher or to their cooperating teacher. Student Teachers may choose to invite their cooperating teacher to campus for a lecture or event as deemed appropriate. This is a nice way to provide the cooperating teacher a link to the wonderful resources and programs available at Canisius.
III. Western New York Writing Project, Saturdays at Ten...call WNYWP for more information.

Saturday Writing Program Starts This Week
The WNY Writing Project (WNYWP) will launch this year's Saturdays at 10 Program on Saturday, September 20 in Old Main 414 from 10 a.m. to noon. The first of the monthly programs will be "Meet the New Fellows." Teachers who participated in the WNYWP Summer Institute held at Canisius in July will talk about their inquiry projects and show the movies they created based on their inquiry findings. The program is free, open to faculty, students and the public. Refreshments will be served.

V. Disabilities Film Festival and Speakers Series

When: October 17th and 18th
Where: Market Arcade Theater, 639 Main Street, Buffalo, NY


The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. are pleased to host the 4th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series. The goal is to provide entertainment and information while exploring issues faced by individuals with disabilities. Various films along with prominent speakers will be featured. The programs are intended to educate viewers, offer different perspectives, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities to popular culture.

VIII. 2008 NYS Council for Exceptional Children Convention

The Autism Society of America WNY Chapter and Autistic Services, Inc. are pleased to bring another dynamic speaker to the Western New York Region. Ms. Rebecca Klaw, M.S., M.Ed. will be presenting a half-day workshop titled, “Thoughtful Response to Agitation, Escalation, and Meltdowns in Individuals with ASD- A Proactive Approach,” at Classics V Conference and Banquet Center on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The workshop will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and is co-sponsored by the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY) and Parent-Child Connection. A Survivor’s Guide to Assistive Technology
Presented by: Natalie Levan, OTR/L and Deborah Holman MS Ed, Special Educator.

This presentation will provide service providers an overview to the framework of assistive technology (AT). Emphasis will be given on determining when and what type of AT is appropriate, how to assess for AT, who can recommend and order AT, how to obtain and or modify current devices, and ensuring and justifying the necessity of the equipment to obtain payment.

X. COMMITTEE ON PRESCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION
(CPSE) Process and Preschool Outcomes – SPP #7


When: October 6, 7, 8 or 10, 2008

The workshop will review specific issues and updates related to the federal and state regulations and the CPSE process, with information relating to the State Performance Plan 7 - Preschool Outcomes. Topics included: entry/exit assessment process, evaluation tools, outcome ratings scale, child outcomes summary form, and the roles and responsibilities of the CPSE and CSE. School administrators, & personnel, county evaluators, municipal representatives, community agencies and service providers are invited.

XIII. NFRC Fall Conference

Topic: "Literacy Instruction and Literature for Today's Educators"
Dr. Morrow will discuss research and policy that is affecting literacy instruction. This will include studies illustrating the importance of exemplary teachers of reading and their characteristics. The presentation will then focus on taking the policy and research and putting it into classroom practice through creating literacy rich classroom environments, motivating children to want to read and write and strategies that work for successful achievement. The organization and management of the daily program in literacy will be illustrated through modeling of procedures, PowerPoint slides and video of classrooms.

Simon will talk about his journey in writing from his book PAPER AIRPLANES published in 1971 to his newest books PENGUINS and OUR SOLAR SYSTEM published by Collins/Smithsonian in 2008.
