learn at canisius

The European studies major at Canisius focuses on the history, government, economics, culture and languages of Europe. As Europe evolves into a more cohesive region, it is increasingly important that American business leaders, educators and government officials be prepared to deal with and understand this multi-national, interdependent union.

The Canisius Advantage
The program prepares students for graduate school or fellowship programs, such as the Fulbright Scholarship, as well as careers in international law, business, diplomacy or teaching. Program director John Occhipinti, PhD is an expert on the European Union (EU). In 2005, he was invited by the State Department to brief the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to the European Union on internal security policy in the EU.

European studies students participate in subsidized trips to a European nation to participate in EuroSim, an annual intercollegiate EU simulation.

Special Programs
Dual and Triple Majors
The European Studies program enables students to tailor their studies to their own interests and career goals.  It can be taken with a major in a traditional academic discipline such as fine arts, foreign language, history or political science.

European Studies Certificate
This program combines the minor requirements with an academic semester abroad. Approved programs in Belgium, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, and France are available through Canisius’ Office of International Student Programs.
