Safety Tip – October 2011

You & Your Automobile

Since motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of death in the United States, you have a vested interest in assuring your car is fit to operate and you are fit to drive it.

• It is estimated that you make 200 decisions during every mile traveled. At 40 mph that comes out to 133 decisions per minute. Don’t make these decisions distracted or impaired. Anticipate – Drive Defensively.

• It is estimated that your eyes are off the road for up to 4.6 seconds when performing many texting functions. Imagine driving with your eyes closed for 4.6 seconds. At 40 mph, you car travels almost the length of a football field in 4.6 seconds. Scary! Don’t text while driving.

• Statistics indicate cell phone use while driving can be as dangerous as driving while impaired. Even a hands-free conversation can distract you from focusing full attention on the road. Try not to use your cell phone while driving. If you must, be sure it’s hands free.

• Review the preventative maintenance items we discussed last month.

Tis The Season

The ghosts and goblins will be out this weekend. It gets dark early. Visibility may be further diminished by inclement weather. Drive accordingly. These little trick or treaters have no concept of what it takes to stop a car. They may not even see you.

Did you get your flu shot?
