program overview

Art history students at all levels learn to decipher and interpret a broad range of artistic styles within a cultural, historical, and global context. At the same time, they explore the relationship between function, form and content in the visual arts.

Our courses teach students to look at and appreciate the visual features of the world around them and to understand the cultures of past and distant civilizations. Students spend every class period looking at works of art and using them as a gateway to greater knowledge of religion, history, literature, philosophy and psychology. Most courses encourage students to look at art in Buffalo museums and galleries, which heightens their awareness of art in all aspects of their lives.
