Learning Goals & Objectives
Learning Goal 1
Candidates in the Online TESOL/Bilingual Education programs will demonstrate content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge necessary for successful performance in their field.
Candidates will:
- Demonstrate understanding of language as a system, including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and semantics, and support English Language Learners (ELLs) as they acquire English language and literacy in order to achieve in the content areas.
- Demonstrate understanding of and can apply theories and research in language acquisition and development to support their ELLs’ English language and literacy learning and content-area achievement.
Learning Goal 2
Candidates in the Online TESOL/Bilingual Education program will demonstrate professional skills and dispositions necessary for successful performance in their field.
Candidates will:
- Know, understand, and use evidence-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing standards-based ESL and content instruction.
- Become knowledgeable about program models and skilled in teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills.
- Integrate technology as well as choose and adapt classroom resources appropriate for their ELLs.
Learning Goal 3
Candidates in the Online TESOL/Bilingual Education program will demonstrate willingness to use their skills to benefit and serve society. Within the contexts of their work, candidates promote authentic learning, social and emotional development, and a commitment to social justice in environments that foster respect for diversity and the dignity of all.
Candidates will:
- Know, understand, and use major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to the nature and role of culture and cultural groups to construct supportive learning environments for ELLs.
- Demonstrate understanding of how cultural groups and individual cultural identities affect language learning and school achievement.
Learning Goal 4
Candidates in the Online TESOL/Bilingual Education program will demonstrate self-reflection as a habit of mind, continuously assessing and refining their professional practice as they construct a rich repertoire of research-based knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective performance ensuring that all students and/or clients have optimal opportunities to learn and grow.
Candidates will:
- Keep current with new instructional techniques, research results, advances in the ESL field, and education policy issues and demonstrate knowledge of the history of ESL teaching.
- Use such information to reflect on and improve their instruction and assessment practices.
Learning Goal 5
Candidates in the Online TESOL/Bilingual Education program will become adept at applying their acquired knowledge in the process of evaluating their own professional performance and decision-making with respect to its impact on students and/or clients, organizations, and the wider community.
Candidates will:
- Know, understand, and use evidence-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, ad managing standards-based ESL and content instruction.
- Become knowledgeable about program models and skilled in teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills.
- Integrate technology as well as choose and adapt classroom resources appropriate for their ELLs.
- Demonstrate understanding of issues and concepts of assessment and use standards-based procedures with ELLs.
- Work collaboratively with school staff and the community to improve the learning environment, provide support, and advocate for ELLs and their families.
