1. What types of jobs will I be qualified for upon completion of the program?
Our graduates have gone on to a variety of jobs in health-related fields, including cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, health education, health promotion, and coaching. Alternatively, our graduates sometimes decide to continue their education by pursuing terminal degrees.

2. Upon graduation, will I need any additional certifications for my chosen career path?
Although not required for graduation, we prepare our students for certification by the American College of Sports Medicine. Our curriculum prepares students to take examinations to become ACSM Certified Personal Trainers, Health/Fitness Instructors, Exercise Specialists, and Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologists. To date, our students have approximately a 95% success rate at passing the Health/Fitness Instructor certification exam, and a 100% success rate with the Exercise Specialist exam. In addition, many of our students take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist examination offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Although these additional certifications are not necessary to find employment, you should be prepared for these certification examinations by the time you graduate, and the combination of a Master’s Degree and these certifications will make you very qualified and competitive for many jobs in the health and human performance field.

3. What are the qualifications of faculty members in the program?
Our faculty consists of 2 full-time and 5 adjunct faculty members. The founder of the program, Dr. Khalid Bibi, is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and was a co-editor of the recently published ACSM Certification Review, 2nd edition. The other full-time faculty member, Dennis Koch, served as a reviewer for this book. Both Dr. Bibi and Mr. Koch have extensive research experience and multiple publications to their credit. The adjunct faculty members were recruited to the program to teach courses that are specific to their expertise. Our Health Care Systems course, for instance, is taught by Kristina Young, a well-known expert in the field. Our pharmacodynamics course is taught by a Doctor of Pharmacy, Patrick Gannon, and our nutrition course is team-taught by Mary Jo Parker and Sheila Flavin, who both hold R.D. certifications and M.S. degrees in nutrition. Finally, Peter Schneider holds a M.S. degree in Exercise Physiology and has extensive experience in working with athletes. In addition to his duties at Canisius College, he is also the Assistant Athletic Director and the Head Ice Hockey Coach at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

6. Are there any graduate assistantships available?
Yes. We have one graduate assistantship available each year, which includes tuition waivers and a 10-month stipend. 9. When is the deadline for applying to the program?
There are no set deadlines when applicants will no longer be accepted. We operate on a rolling admissions basis. We recommend submitting all materials required for admission at least 30 days prior to the start date for the term you wish to begin. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible because we can only accept a limited number of students each year, given the hands-on nature of several of our courses. For Canadian students, we stop processing applications approximately two to three weeks prior to the beginning of classes, each semester, to allow sufficient time for processing immigration forms.

10. How long does it take to complete the program?
It is possible to complete the program in one calendar year by starting in the fall semester and taking every course offered each semester (5 courses per semester) in the fall and spring, and then completing internships or thesis credits in the summer session. However, we allow you to work at your own pace, and most of our students take two years to graduate.

11. When can I start the program?
Canisius College has three terms per year: fall (late August), spring (mid-January) and summer (May/June). Students generally start in either the fall or spring term because we only offer internship and thesis courses in the summer. You can see which courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters by clicking here.
You select your start date when you file your application. If you are unsure of your start date, select the earliest one that you are most likely to attend. Should you be accepted and wish to change your start date to a later term, simply inform the office of your new start date in writing and the change will be noted on your file.
