Dr. Dennis W. Koch Assistant Professor of Sports Medicine, Health & Human Performance Director of Health & Human Performance Program
Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University B.S., Canisius College.
Dennis received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Canisius College in 1999. As an undergraduate student, he was in the Pre-Med program. However, by the end of his junior year, he began to realize that medicine was not his calling. His love of sports, and running in particular, led him to pursue an exercise science minor, under the tutelage of Dr. Khalid Bibi. After graduation, Dennis passed the American College of Sports Medicine's Health Fitness Instructor certification exam.
The following fall, Dennis went on to graduate school at Pennsylvania State University, where he was awarded a graduate fellowship from the National Institute of Health to study physiology at Noll Physiological Research Center. He chose Dr. David Proctor as his dissertation advisor and studied the effects of age on the regulation of blood flow to exercising muscles. He co-authored several abstracts and manuscripts and was published in The Journal of Physiology, The Journal of Applied Physiology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and The Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology. In the Spring of 2004, Dennis was awarded a Caroline tum Suden award for outstanding student research by the American Physiological Society at the annual FASEB meeting. He recently completed his doctoral dissertation, entitled "Effects of Age on Sympathetic Vasoconstrictor Responsiveness in Exercising Leg Muscles," at Penn State.
Dennis returned to Canisius College in the Fall of 2004, and he is excited to be educating students on exercise, health, and fitness. He hopes that his efforts will have a positive impact on people's health here in Western New York.
