Abstract: The study of rational tangles is a subsection of knot theory. Difficulty arises when one is attempting to determine if two tangles are equivalent. However, in 1970 John Conway published a paper detailing that every rational tangle can be written as a rational number. Moreover, Conway found that two rational tangles that have the same value are equivalent, regardless of appearance. The purpose of this talk will be to explain how one determines the value of a rational tangle and the uses of rational tangles.
