Abstract:
Continued fractions are used in approximating irrationals by rationals. In this talk, we present the construction of general continued fractions (based on the division algorithm) and we calculate the continued fraction expansion of certain numbers. We characterize special continued fractions (finite, periodic, purely periodic). At the end, we use continued fractions in diophantine approximation problems i.e., finding good rational approximations to irrational numbers.
