Abstract: Lie Algebras are non-associative algebraic structures with multiplication. They play an important role in mathematics and physics. We will look at a specific type of Lie Algebra, one without any imposed relations, called the Free Lie Algebra. We will prove the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem which is the main combinatorial property of Free Lie Algebras.
