- Paid internships can be done just for pay or for pay and credit.
- Unpaid internships require that students earn credit.
- Sometimes non-profit organizations can hire students as volunteers and credit is not always required.
- Payment status alone does not determine learning or career value of the experience. Interest, goals, and individual priorities need to be examined when deciding paid versus unpaid opportunities.
Credit Internships
- Earning credit is an option for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
- Generally, credit can satisfy a major-related or free elective.
- The number of on-site hours varies according to major but generally a total of 120 hours is required.
- Eligibility requirements and the credit approval process are determined by individual academic departments. Qualifications and procedures vary from department to department; therefore, consult your department chair for information. Click on Planning and Internship for additional links and information.
College Student Experience Programs
- Work experience programs provide paid jobs related to a particular industry, sector, or agency, but the work is not structured as an academic credit bearing experience.
- Work can occur full-time or part-time, either during the academic year or in summer.
- Programs may serve as stepping stones to a future internship or other career pursuits.
- Participation allows students to meet personal, career, or financial needs, while still maintaining the goal of earning a college degree.
- It is recommended that students research and understand what is required in order to participate. Click on program links for how to plan while in college.

When do internships begin?
Internships typically begin in September or January, while summer internships begin at the end of May or June. However, some organizations search for interns as the need arises.
When should I start looking?
It is always best to plan ahead. If you are thinking of doing an internship locally, give yourself 1-2 months lead time prior to the time you wish to intern. However, some internship programs require that students apply well in advance. For example, if the internship program is with a law enforcement agency, background investigation can take up to six months. If you are looking to intern in another city or overseas, it is advised that you start planning at least 4-9months earlier. This will allow time to research opportunities, and meet application deadlines.
