Responsibilities and Criteria for London Metropolitan University Seminar Professor
Academic:
- Design and teach a nine-day seminar relevant to the Canisius students’ study abroad experience in London.
- Prepare a topic that lends itself to interdisciplinary work so that the seminar can fulfill a wide range of area studies requirements.
- Structure the course in such a way to take into consideration the challenges of distance and communication. The syllabus and course materials should provide clear guidelines and deadlines.
Student Life:
- Be familiar with London and its environment.
- Have experience and/or interest with travel abroad.
- Be able to orient students to living and traveling abroad.
- Be willing and able to deal with non-academic problems that may arise during the first week, such as jet-lag, orientation problems of a seminar compressed into one week and the first experience living away from home for many students.
- Serve as liaison between Canisius students and London Metropolitan University in dealing with seminar arrangements, including living accommodations.
- Be flexible, patient, resourceful, and able to work with students in an unfamiliar environment.
- Be familiar with different backgrounds and cultures in order to orient students about issues of cultural diversity in their living and studies.
General:
- The seminar week will generally take place the second week of the semester. The faculty member should consult with his/her Department Chair and appropriate Dean to secure release time.
- The faculty member should be aware of an additional time commitment to attend information and orientation sessions before the London Metropolitan University semester begins as well as follow-up with the students’ progress with the seminar work during the semester.
- Stipend: $700 plus living expenses and transportation.
