In an effort to reduce the effect of spyware on campus computers, we have compiled a list of programs that the ITS staff has found useful in combating the spyware threat.

1. Lavasoft Ad-Aware (Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP): Ad-Aware Standard Edition is the award winning, free, multicomponent detection and removal utility that consistantly leads the industry in safety, user satisfaction, support, and reliability.

2. SpyBot-Search and Destroy (Suggested OS - Win98/Me/XP): SpyBot S&D can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. SpyBot is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something is hidden on your computer. (Not to be confused with the Spybot worm which is a harmful computer infection and needs to be removed.)

4. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a very effective spyware and malware

5. CWShredder (Windows 95/98/2000/Me/XP): A small and free utility for removing CoolWebSearch (also known as CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). More information on the CWS hijacker, including recent variants of it, can be found here. This tool will find and remove all traces of the CoolWebSearch hijacker on your system.
