In an effort to reduce the effect of spyware on campus computers, we have compiled a list of programs that the ITS staff has found useful in combating the spyware threat.

1. Lavasoft Ad-Aware (Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP): Ad-Aware Standard Edition is the award winning, free, multicomponent detection and removal utility that consistantly leads the industry in safety, user satisfaction, support, and reliability.

2. SpyBot-Search and Destroy (Suggested OS - Win98/Me/XP): SpyBot S&D can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. SpyBot is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something is hidden on your computer. (Not to be confused with the Spybot worm which is a harmful computer infection and needs to be removed.)

3. Pop-up Manager (Browser Plugin for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, Windows 95 or later): Stops pop-up ads through the internet browser. Site options can be set to allow pop-ups on certain sites, and holding the CTRL key while clicking on a link will temporarily disable the blocking effect. Freeware.

4. Google Toolbar (Browser Plugin for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Windows 95 or later): A specialized toolbar is added to Internet Explorer, containing a quick internet search through Google, pop-up blocker, and other useful utilities. As with Pop-up Manager, clicking a link while holding the CTRL key will disable the blocking effect. Pop-ups can be allowed for certain sites simply by clicking on the pop-up blocker button on the toolbar. All future visits to that site will be unblocked until the setting is changed. Freeware.
