Rev. Michael Agliardo, S.J.

Rev. Michael Agliardo, S.J., Assistant Professor of Sociology at Canisius College, is from Mamaroneck, New York. He spent his first years as a Jesuit in Syracuse (1984-86). He taught theology at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester (1988-90). In spring 2009, he returned to Western New York to teach at Canisius College.  Before entering the Jesuits, he received his A.B. in history from Harvard. As a Jesuit, he did his philosophical studies at Fordham University and his theological studies at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology (in Cambridge).  After ordination to the priesthood, he did doctoral studies in the sociology of religion and cultural sociology at the University of California, San Diego.
 
  Rev. Frederick G. Betti, S.J.

Fr. Fred Betti, S.J., the Director of Campus Ministry at Canisius High School and a Buffalo native, has been a Jesuit for 29 years and a priest for 18. He is especially involved in the direction of retreats and Christian service programs that were recently featured in the New York Province publication, Holy Boldness.  Before coming to Canisius High School, this 1979 graduate of Canisius College taught at Regis High School and McQuaid Jesuit where he was the chairperson of Religious Studies and Director of the MAGIS Service Program. He has also done pastoral work in numerous parishes in New York City, Rochester, and Buffalo.

Rev. Joseph E. Billotti, S.J., Assistant to the Vice President for College Relations, has been a Jesuit since 1950 and a priest since 1963. After receiving a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University in 1969, he taught at LeMoyne College from 1969 to 1978. He was President of Canisius High School from 1981 to 1989 and then spent 20 years in Micronesia in the Western Pacific as pastor in the Marshall Islands and Vicar General of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. He was also the Director of Ponape Agricultural and Trade School (1995-1999) on Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia

Rev. John Bucki, S.J., Director of Campus Ministry, is a Buffalo native who has been a Jesuit for 40 years and a priest for 29 years.  He studied at Fordham University and at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California.  For many years he enjoyed working in New York City in parish and social ministries.  At various times he has lived in Africa and the Philippines.  As director of the Office of Campus Ministry, he organizes the annual service trip to New York City, promotes and helps with retreats, goes to many meetings, and is present at numerous events on campus.  He lives in the Delavan Residence Hall.
 
Rev. Joseph F. Burke, S.J.

Rev. Joseph F. Burke, S.J., Adjunct Professor of Counseling in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Canisius College and Co-Director of Spiritual Formation at Christ the King Seminary, is a practicing psychotherapist, and responsible at Canisius for the clinical training of those who will become school and agency counselors. He earned his Ph.D. at Fordham University in religion and psychology and does research on issues of spirituality in the therapeutic process. Since coming to Canisius in 1997, he has also been a spiritual director, a member of the Presbyterial Senate of the Diocese of Buffalo, and a popular presenter at workshops and conferences.

Rev. Tom Colgan, S.J., Associate Director of Campus Ministry, has been a Jesuit since 1963 and a priest since 1975. He grew up in Washington State and worked for many years in the Northwest, especially among Native American peoples. Father Tom says Mass, provides spiritual direction, runs retreat programs, especially the 19th Annotation version of The Spiritual Exercises, and can be seen around campus with his "Lucy" ministry. He is also very passionate about peace and justice.

Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., has been President of Canisius College since July 1993. He was ordained a priest in 1967. After receiving a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1971, he taught Philosophy at Fordham University before becoming Provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus from 1978-84. He also served as Executive and Academic Vice-President at John Carroll University from 1991-3. Twice he was a delegate to a Jesuit General Congregation in Rome: in 1983 at the Congregation that elected Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach as General of the Society of Jesus, and in 2008 at the Congregation that elected the present Jesuit General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolas.
 
Rev. Paul J. Dugan, S.J.

Rev. Paul J. Dugan, S.J., Moderator of Athletics, is a South Buffalo native, who graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute and has been a priest for 52 years. In earlier years he taught at Brooklyn Prep, McQuaid Jesuit, and Canisius High School and was a very successful debating coach. Since his arrival at Canisius in 1970, he has been a campus minister, a chaplain to the Alumni, and Moderator of Athletics. For work with athletes he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2007 a new residence hall was also named in honor of this friend and advisor of students.

Rev. Edward J. Durkin, S.J., Director of the St. Augustine Scholars Program of the Nativity/Miguel Middle School in Buffalo, arrived in the city in 2003 to help start this new venture after 15 years in Harlem, preceded by 15 years on the lower east side of Manhattan. In addition to teaching, he has also coached basketball, track, and baseball. He is a trustee of Canisius High School and, in January 2008, received the Bishop's Education Medal from the Diocese of Buffalo for his work in helping to establish the new program on Buffalo's East Side.

Rev. Michael A. Guzik, S.J., teacher of Religion at Canisius High School, grew up on a dairy farm, received a B.A. in history from St. John Fisher College and an M.A. in history from the University of Buffalo before entering the Society of Jesus in 1992. As a Jesuit, he has taught at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., and at Canisius High School and worked in parishes in the United States, Poland, and Jamaica, West Indies. His hobbies include reading detective novels and occasionally practicing aikido.  His most recent publication, "From Soldier to Saint:  Ignatian Spiritual Elements in Quo Vadis?" appeared in the Polish Review.
 
Rev. Robert A. Haus, S.J.

Rev. Robert A. Haus, S.J., Professor Emeritus of Mathematics & Statistics and Community Treasurer, joined the Society of Jesus in 1942 and was ordained a Jesuit priest at Fordham University in 1955. He earned degrees at Boston College, Woodstock College, Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame and taught for 45 years at Canisius College, beginning in 1959. He also was named the Teacher of the Year by Canisius’ Alumni Association in 1992 and continues to serve as a residence hall counselor and faculty advisor to the student chapter of the Canisius Honor Society, DiGamma. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking and sailing.
 
Rev. Daniel P. Jamros, S.J.

Rev. Daniel P. Jamros, S.J., Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Theology, became a New England Province Jesuit in 1967, a priest in 1976, and a teacher of Catholic theology at Canisius in 1985, where he has also chaired the Faculty Senate and managed Faculty Handbook revisions. His academic interests include the doctrine of God and Hegel’s philosophy of religion. His Ph.D. is from Vanderbilt, and he returns to its neighborhood every summer to work at the Cathedral parish. He has also worked and studied in Iraq, Lebanon, France, and Germany. Fr. Jamros enjoys languages, literary classics, movies, friendships, and the Boston Red Sox.

Rev. Daniel J. Lusch, S.J., a Jesuit since 1951 and a priest since 1962, is engaged in Pastoral Ministry, spiritual/retreat direction, preaching, and workshops. Before coming to Western New York, he served as a campus minister at Boston College and taught in their Institute of Religious Education & Pastoral Ministry. As a writer, he has published reflections and poems and recently completed a manuscript, Write into Me: Exploring Divine Plenty. He currently has a poem collection in progress. Ignatian and contemplative spiritual traditions are his special interests. Walking, writing, reading, the world of nature, and music are also sources of inspiration and nourishment.

Rev. Patrick Lynch, S.J., Chair and Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Theology and Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Catholic Studies, entered the Jesuits in 1960 and was ordained a priest in 1972. He received a doctorate in Christian Theology from the University of Chicago and currently teaches courses on Catholic Social Ethics, Religion and Politics, and the Jesuits. Prior to beginning full-time teaching duties at Canisius College in 1987, he taught at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City and LeMoyne College. Currently he is a Carnegie Scholar for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Rev. William J. McCurdy, S.J., Chaplain to Faculty and Staff and Mentor for Ignatian Vision and Mission at Canisius High School, has been a Jesuit for 60 years and a priest for 47. For the past six years he has trained faculty at Canisius High School in what makes a Jesuit school Jesuit. Previously he spent five years as Vocation Director for the NY Province, 26 years at Canisius High school as Guidance Director and several years at each, Canisius College and McQuaid Jesuit in Rochester, NY, as a chaplain. Golf, theater, music, skiing, cycling, and watching sporting events are his hobbies.
 
Rev. Vincent M. McNally, S.J.

Rev. Vincent McNally, S.J., recently celebrated 60 years as a priest and describes himself as a “retired nonagenarian doing light pastoral service.”  From 1950-71 he served in the Philippines as a principal at three Jesuit high schools and Rector/President of two Colleges — in Naga and Zamboanga. As principal of the Ateneo de Manila, he achieved the first accreditation for a Philippines’ boys’ high school. In 1972 he returned to the States to serve as a retreat director for over 20 years, but also to assist in the New York Provincial’s office and to be a hospital chaplain and a campus minister.

Rev. Martin X. Moleski, S.J., Professor of Religious Studies & Theology, is a graduate of Canisius High School, who has been a Jesuit for 35 years and a priest for 27. He studied at Boston College, Fordham University, and Regis College, Toronto, before earning his doctorate in theology at the Catholic University of America. He taught briefly at LeMoyne College before moving to Canisius College in 1990. He is the author of numerous articles and two books, Personal Catholicism and Michael Polanyi: Scientist and Philosopher. He also regularly does pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Buffalo.

Rev. Paul W. Nochelski, S.J., Associate Professor & Chair, Department of Adolescence Education, was ordained a priest in 1971. After ordination, Father Nochelski studied educational administration and social sciences at the University at Buffalo, while working as an administrator at Canisius High School.  He also served as Director of Residential Life and Asssociate Chaplain at Nazareth College of Rochester before returning to his alma mater, McQuaid Jesuit, as principal. He has taught in the School of Education and Human Services in Canisius College for fifteen years.

Rev. Michael Pastizzo, S.J, Media Specialist in Information Technology and Asistant Professor of Religious Studies & Theology, entered the Jesuits in 1960. He is a member of the FacTS (Faculty Technology Services) Center that helps Canisius faculty with instructional computing. He also teaches courses on religion and film and religion and art in the Religious Studies & Theology Department. Prior to his arrival at Canisius Fr. Pastizzo earned an S.T.D. degree from Rome’s Gregorian University in religion and art, has been an academic dean for Jesuits in studies, and worked in Rome, helping people to learn computer skills.

Rev. James Pribek, S.J., Assistant Professor of English at Canisius College, specializes in Irish Literature. A native of Wisconsin, his Jesuit formation took him to St. Paul, Omaha, Spokane, the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. After ordination in Milwaukee in 1999, Fr. Pribek lived and studied in Dublin, Ireland, where he also worked in a diocesan parish. He holds a doctorate from University College Dublin, where he wrote a dissertation tracing the influence of Cardinal John Henry Newman on James Joyce. This is his twenty-first year as a Jesuit and his fourth at Canisius.

Rev. George Restrepo, S.J., Assistant to the Director of Student Life, entered the Jesuits in 1952 and was ordained a priest in 1965. With a Masters in film from NYU he currently is responsible for film series and provides assistance to Little Theater in addition to helping in local parishes. Prior to coming to Canisius in January 2008, he did parish and school work in New York City, Baltimore, and Puerto Rico.   Among his many activities were film and opera series in the places where he worked, and pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Lourdes, Fatima, Lisieux, and the island of Molokai.

Rev. John J. Ryan, S.J., Chaplain for Parents & Alumni at Canisius High School, returned to Canisius in 2002 after teaching Latin, Greek, and English there from 1969-79. Meantime, he spent 20 years in Nigeria, Zaire, and Ghana doing many jobs, most notably serving as Assistant to the Regional Jesuit Superior, as Assistant to the Director of Novices for Nigeria/Ghana, and as Director of Vocations for the same region. He also did parish work in Benin City and at St. Ann’s in Buffalo and was a campus minister both at the University of Lagos in Nigeria and Canisius College.

Rev. Michael F. Tunney, S.J., Professor in the Fine Arts Department and Rector of the Canisius Jesuit Community, teaches two-dimensional art courses, directs the studio program, and oversees the Vogt Gallery at Canisius. He earned an MFA in painting and an MS in art history from Pratt Institute.

Gallery credits include the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Art Dialogue Gallery and regionally in Boston, Fairfield, Kansas City, and New York City. Tunney occasionally illustrates AMERICA Magazine articles.  

Tunney entered the Jesuits in 1976 and was ordained in 1988. He is pastorally active on campus and at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy and the former St. Mary of Sorrows.
 
Rev. David F. White, S.J.

Fr. David F. White, S.J., has been the “Minister” (assistant to the Rector) of the Jesuit Community since 2003. He manages the building, vehicles, and garden at Loyola Hall, monitors the health of community members, assists the elderly with transportation, and arranges housing for about 150 Jesuit guests each year. He has been a Jesuit for 54 years and a priest for 41.  For 31 of these years he taught physics, chemistry, and theater technology at Xavier High School in New York City. He also has had a long but currently dormant interest in theatrical lighting. Occasionally he assists at a rural parish in Cattaraugus County.

Rev. Eugene Zimpfer, S.J., Special Assistant to the Vice-President for Advancement at Canisius High School, is a 1949 graduate and a past president of the school. He did graduate work in secondary educational administration at Columbia before serving as Principal at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City and McQuaid Jesuit in Rochester, NY. In his current job he manages data collection services at Canisius High School and does priestly work at an assisted living facility. This 1953 graduate of the University of Notre Dame has been a Jesuit for 54 years and a priest for 43.
