study language at canisius

Linguistics encompasses a broad range of topics including:
  • The relationship between language and thought.
  • The role of language in social interaction.
  • The definition of national and ethnic identities.
  • The distinction between human and animal communication.
  • The distinction between oral and written language.
  • The differences between first and second language acquisition.
The study of linguistics imparts intellectual discipline, strengthens oral and written language and analytical skills, and fosters appreciation for the subtleties and complexities of language and its role in the human experience.

The mission of the Department of General and Applied Linguistics is to introduce the study of the structure and functions of language and its complex role in the human behavior.  Linguistics uses the scientific procedures of data collection and the testing of hypotheses to develop its theories regarding the nature of language and its use in society.

For students interested in exploring the field, the Department of General and Applied Linguistics offers a range of introductory and upper level courses in linguistics and applied linguistics, including courses in composition, and English as a foreign language, to complement other areas of study. The courses serve as electives, Area Studies, or as requirements in some majors.

Composition courses offered by the department share a commitment to exploring the unique properties of written language that distinguish it from oral language.  The interaction of syntax and semantics is formally addressed in addition to the pragmatic aspects of language.  Composition courses support any major.

The department offers the analytical language course LAN101 for students who need to strengthen their critical and analytical language skills.  Students examine the roles language plays in an array of disciplines and majors, focusing upon skills needed to read text critically, analytically and conceptually.  This course supports any major.

The department provides an English as a foreign language program for international students.  EFL courses are grounded in contemporary language acquisition research, relying upon scientifically founded methodology and instructional practices.  Courses to improve conversational skills, reading comprehension, writing, and pronunciation are available.

Look for a linguistics minor in the near future.  A minor in linguistics provides a good foundation for students majoring in social sciences or humanities, education, foreign languages, business or pre-law.

In addition to our course selections, the department houses Canisius' undergraduate peer tutoring center, a multidisciplinary center for students who wish to improve their academic skills.  Our undergraduate tutors are highly successful students who are rigorously trained in effective methods of tutoring.  The center is a friendly environment for students who seek help with their studies.
