Hayes Named New Director of Campus Ministry
Michael F. Hayes Jr. is the new director of the Canisius College Office of Campus Ministry. He began work at Canisius earlier this month.
Hayes comes to Canisius College from the University at Buffalo where he served as spiritual director and campus minister at St. Joseph University Parish, located on the south campus. In this role, Hayes collaborated with several departments to serve the spiritual and academic needs of undergraduate, graduate, medical and dental students. He developed new alternative spring break programs to Cleveland and New York City, and another that focuses on lifelong discernment in addition to service. During his tenure, Hayes also launched a service program for athletes, established a new marriage ministry program for the University Parish, and developed a new community service outreach program. Help the Heights brings together the university’s Community Outreach Office, its campus living community and local community members to help revitalize the University Heights neighborhood.
Hayes is the author of Googling God: The Religious Landscape of People in their 20s and 30s. The how-to book examines ways in which to minister to two distinct generations in the Catholic Church, and explores recent historical and technological changes and their effects on young adults. Hayes also developed the GooglingGod blog, which serves as a thoughtful media outreach ministry for the millennial generation. He is the author of Loving Work: A Spiritual Guide to Finding the Work We Love and Bringing Love to the Work We Do.
Prior to UB, Hayes co-founded BustedHalo.com, a spirituality web magazine written by young adults for young adults. The web magazine was co-founded and continues to be sponsored by the Paulist Fathers. The religious order of Roman Catholic priests believes strongly in the use of modern methods of communication to bring to life the ancient message of the Gospel.
Hayes holds a BA in English from Fordham University and an MA in young adult ministry from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education. In 2010, the National Catholic Reporter named Hayes one of the “Best Progressively-Minded Catholic Bloggers.” He previously received second place in the Catholic Press Award – Best Feature for his article “Transformation and the 20s and 30s Crowd.”
One of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York.
