Dr. David Has had a total of 40 years in education. He taught grades six to twelve then served as a guidance counselor for two years. This was followed by four years in a BOCES where he directed an alternative program, a gifted program, and worked with districts across New York State on district policy and regulations. He also spent 25 years as an administrator in a different BOCES working with districts on a variety of curriculum, instruction, and assessment initiatives.  Upon retirement he came to Canisius College to be part of the EDA program of whichhe is now the director.  He has a bachelors, three masters, and a doctorate degree in education, counseling, and administration.

Nancy Wellenzohn, EdD, Assistant Director

Dr. Wellenzohn serves as the Assistant Director of the Educational Administration program at Canisius College.  She  teaches in the program and provides supervision for students completing their internship.  Dr. Wellenzohn completed her Doctorate in Educational Administration at the University of Buffalo and holds School District Administrator and School Business Administrator certification in New York.  She also holds an MBA and a BS in Secondary Education and is certified to teach both Social Studies and Business Education.  Dr. Wellenzohn has served as both a teacher and administrator at the middle and high school levels in New York, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. 
Dr. Wellenzohn also serves as Assistant Dean for Program Quality, Undergraduate Affairs, and Director of Accreditation for the School of Education and Human Services.

Adjunct Faculty

JoAnn Balazs recently joined the adjunct faculty at Canisus in the Educational Administration program to teach EDA 610 - School Law.  She earned her Juris Doctor at the University at Buffalo School of Law, her teaching (English 7-12) and administrative (SAS, SDA) certifications through Canisus College, and her Bachelor of Arts in English, cum laude, through Geneseo. Mrs. Balazs was an attorney in private practice prior to her work in education. She served as an English teacher, assistant principal and principal at Amherst High School, and now serves as the Director of Management Services at Erie 1 BOCES. Her current work includes policy and regulation development, finance and legislation, safety/risk management, and arts in education.

Regent Bennett currently serves as a member-at-large in the New York State Board of Regents.  He is also Chancellor Emeritus, having served in that position from 2002-2009.  He teaches electives in the Educational Administration program at Canisius and also teaches at Niagara University and SUNY at Buffalo.

Dr. Linda S.D. Croglia is a former teacher and experienced principal both in the Buffalo Public Schools and the Ken Ton School District.  While Principal of the Makowski School in Buffalo, the school was designated as a School for the Twenty First Century by the NYSED.  She is on the faculty of Canisius College and has also served on the faculty at the University at Buffalo Graduate Schools of Educational Leadership and Policy.  As an Educational Consultant with a specialty in Mentoring/Coaching and Strategic School Improvement Planning, she has conducted Professional Development in the Buffalo area, and in several countries around the world including Vietnam, Singapore and Argentina.  Dr. Croglia has been on the faculty at Canisius since 2003.

Andrew J. Freedman graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1992 and received his law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1996. He concentrates his practice in the area of Education Law, representing clients before the Courts of New York State, the Commissioner of Education, serving as a Hearing Officer and/or representing clients in §3214 Student Discipline matters, and representing schools in all phases of Special Education litigation.  He represents and advises Boards of Education on their powers and duties under New York State Education Law, and conducts policy reviews and practical policy implementation as well.  In addition to his active school law practice, Freedman has been adjunct faculty at Canisius College since 2001.


Freedman is a member of the Erie County Bar Association and the past Chairman of the Erie County Bar Association School and Municipal Law Committee. He is also a member of the New York State Bar Association and the New York State School Attorneys Association. He is a frequent speaker on legal issues impacting school districts. He is admitted to practice before the New York State Courts and the United States District Court for the Western District of New York.



Joseph Gentile

Joseph Gentile has recently retired after 40 years as an educator in Western New York and has been teaching at Canisius since 1984.  Certified to teach Social Studies, Mathematics, Computer Education k-12, his experiences were divided between Buffalo City Schools and a suburban setting.  Under his guidance both Hutch Tech HS (a city school) and Clarence HS (a suburban school) became National Schools of Excellence.  He has also served in the interim and advisory role in some local schools.  Gentile currently works for the Western New York Service Council and throughout it all he has been an active member at Canisius College, teaching the following courses at one time or another.  Currently, he has developed the online courses in for the Principalship and School Law in addition to doing on campus classes.

Dr. Lisa Krueger's passion, educational research, doctoral dissertation are  focused on school bullying, completing her dissertation in this field of research in May 2010, and she conducts staff development and workshops on school bullying throughout Western New York.  She earned a Master of Science in Education degree and New York State SDA certification at Canisius College, and  obtained a Master of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science degrees at Buffalo State College.  Dr. Krueger's career has included teaching at the elementary level and serving as a principal at the secondary and elementary levels.  Under her guidance, Eggert Road Elementary School in the Orchard Park Central School District was named a Blue Ribbon National School of Excellence.

David J. Lanz is a member of the adjunct faculty at Canisius College and holds a BS. Ed. and an MS. Ed. from SUNY College at Buffalo.  He earned his New York State SDA certification at Canisius College.  Lanz has been a career educator in the Buffalo Public School System.  Now, retired after 37 years of service to the district, he has been a teacher, then central office administrator serving as Director of Instructional Computer Services, Director of MIS, and most recently, Chief School Officer. With more than 40 years of career perspective Lanz continues to develop and deliver appropriate course work for educators wishing to pursue sound and purposeful approaches to leadership in education.

Patrick Phelan, EdD

Dr. Patrick M. Phelan teaches courses related to Personnel/Human Resource Management in School Administration.  Dr. Phelan earned a Doctor of Education and Master of Education Degrees at SUNY Buffalo.  He also earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Canisius College and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.  Dr. Phelan holds the position of Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in the West Seneca Central School District.  He has over 35 years of experience as a Human Resource/Labor Relations practitioner serving for over 15 years as an Administrator in Public Education.  In addition to his practitioner experience Dr. Phelan was an Adjunct Faculty Member for the Western New York Extension Division of the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations for over 25 years.  Dr. Phelan holds Officer level positions in the New York State Association of School Personnel Administrators and the Labor and Employment Relations Association of Western New York.

Joan D. Thomas was named President and Principal of Holy Angels Academy in July 2010 complimenting a 40-year career in education.  She was Superintendent of the Orchard Park Central School District, recognized as a Top 10 School District by Business First newspaper, prior to joining Holy Angels Academy. Before being Superintendent, she was Principal of Orchard Park Middle School, a long time science teacher at Orchard Park Middle School, and science coordinator for the Orchard Park Central School District.  Thomas also worked in West Seneca as a High School Principal at West Seneca West and an Elementary Principal at Potter Road Elementary. For the past ten years, she has been an adjunct professor in the School of Education and Human Resources at Canisius College.  She enjoys reading, seeing her grandkids and is a marathon runner, completing Boston four times.
 

 
John T. Thompson, PhD

Dr. Thompson recently retired as an Associate Professor at Buffalo State College in the Educational Technology graduate program. His over 40 years of experience in education, with over 25 years working with educational technology, includes positions in urban, suburban, and rural PK-12 private and public schools as an elementary and secondary classroom teacher (general education and special education), curriculum coordinator, principal, and school superintendent. He also functioned as director of training for two state governments, director of a computer training organization, and coordinator of several programs in higher education. His PhD is in Education Administration from the University at Buffalo and he holds School District Administrator certification in New York. His current research interests are in online learning, Web conferencing, and green computing. Dr. Thompson has many publications and has made numerous presentations at state, national, and international conferences.

Dr. C. Douglas Whelan is an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Administration at Canisius College.  Dr. Whelan has been teaching EDA 640, School Business Administration, at Canisius College since the Fall of 1996.  He completed his undergraduate work, his Master’s Degree and Doctorate Degree at the University of Buffalo
Dr. Whelan’s educational career spans the last 39 years with four years of teaching as a high school health and physical education instructor, twenty-two years experience as a School Business Administrator, Director of Finance, and Assistant Superintendent for Finance, and since 1999, he has been the Superintendent of Schools for the Starpoint Central School District in Pendleton, NY.

Fran Fritz has served as a Supervisor of Interns since her retirement in 2002. Prior to her retirement, Fran was the principal of Alden Middle School for nine years and assistant principal at West Seneca East Sr, High School for three years. During her teaching career,  Fran taught mathematics in the Tonawanda, West Seneca and Orchard Park school districts. Fran holds a BA and MS degree in Education from SUNYAB.
