This section will give you a brief bio of myself and conclude with a typical day in my life as a Graduate Assistant. I am from South Wales, New York, which is a very small town about 45 minutes south of Buffalo. Yes, my roots classify me as a country gal but I absolutely love living in the city. I received my Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Health from Canisius in 2008. All through out my college career I worked in various positions that always kept me active in the sports world. After graduating, I knew that I wanted to enhance my career further and Canisius' MSA program was perfect for me. It gave me a much more broad degree that would keep me certified in teaching across the United States as well as, open news doors for me as a professional in the business side of sports. This past August I was offered the Graduate Assistant position in the Sport Administration Department, thanks to Staci. This being my last of six years at Canisius, it was a great way to end my college experience. I have learned so much that I will be able to take with me in pursuit of my professional career.
The GA experience has been amazing thus far. Some of my responsibilities include updating the website, creating the MSA bulletin board, producing and editing the MSA Newsletter, The Confidant, volunteering through our MSA Society, helping organize trips, social events and, the annual golf tournament, and communicating program messages via email each week with the MSA Weekly. I have found that these tasks not only give me some extras to add to my resume but they have given me the opportunity to network in the Buffalo area and understand what it takes to be a leader.
A typical Thursday for me is waking up around 7:00 a.m. and getting ready for a morning at the Buffalo Bills where I work as a Customer Relations and Premium Service representative. I stay there until about 1:00 and then head home to take care of the MSA emails. One of my major tasks each day is to make sure that I keep the students updated as to what is going on in the program and answer any questions that they may have. After that, depending on what other items I am currently working on, I either stop into Staci's office or work from home. I am also currently coordinating the Annual MAAC Shootout at Canisius which also involves a lot of planning and time each day. If we have a MSA Society meeting scheduled, I also prepare an agenda for that, being that I am the President. The MSA Society is a group of the graduate students from the program that want to get involved a little further in all the events and opportunities that we have. These meetings usually start around 5:00 and last about 45 min, leaving me just enough time to get to class, if I have it, at 6:00. Class usually ends at around 8:45. I finally get to head home, do some homework, and relax before bed, unless of course a social event is planned...
