Disney Rosewell Fundraiser: January 5th-9th, 2012

Over the Winter holiday three MSA students, Skip Russell, Mathew Miller and Mathew Ferguson, along with Dr. O'Rourke, took a trip to Orlando FLorida to participate in the Disney World Race Weekend, Running for Team Cure, and representing Canisius College and Rosewell Park. It was a successful event and each person finished within their time limit. Dr. O'Rourke took home the blue ribbon and finished with the best time out of the four and prevailed by a two minutes gap. IN the end, over $1000 was donated to Roswell park on behalf of the MSA program and Canisius College.

Rosewell Park is a leading cancer hospital and research institution located in Buffalo, NY. They provide vital services and research for cancer patients.

Ivy Sports Symposium: November 18th, 2011

Nine of our students traveled to Philadelphia, PA to attend the Ivy League Sports Symposium, which was held on November, 18th at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.  The students attended a Philadelphia Flyers game and walked the streets of Philadelphia to take in it's historcial and cultural sights.

The symposium consisted of two keynote discussions and fifteen panel roundtables on current trends in the sports industry. Students were able to attend five panel discussions and allowed the unique opportunity to hear from accomplished executives, administrators, and industry leaders.  The symposium also gave each student a great opporunity to network throughout the conference and mak contacts in all realms of the industry.

February/March 2011:
In Februrary, the Canisius MSA program again volunteered at the Soup Kitchen in South Buffalo, and also volunteered at the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo. We also had several students who volunteered at the Powder Keg Festival, here in Buffalo, on the 12th and 13th. Several students are also attending the NFL Career Conference in Indianapolis, IN on Feburary 25-26. In March, we had 7 students who volunteered at the MAAC Basketball Championships in Bridgeport, CT, from March 3-7, and we have others who attended the SEME Conference at Nationals Park in Washington, DC, on March 25-26. We also had a group of students who traveled to Columbus, OH, for some professional networking opportunities with OSU and two professional teams in the city. Check our photo gallery for pictures from some of these events!

December Community Service Projects: Toys For Tots and Buffalo Soup Kitchen: For their December community service projects, the MSA Society donated toys to the "Toys For Tots" chairty initiative, providing toys for children experiencing financial hardship in the Buffalo area. As a program they raised nearly $100 to donate to this charitable cause! Previously in the month, a group of four MSA students also traveled to the Buffalo Soup Kitchen, where they again helped Sister Celeste and her amazing crew of volunteers combat the ongoing issue of hunger. It was a humbling experience for the four, and the MSA program looks forward to our continued volunteer work within the Buffalo community!

2009-2010 Highlights...
Fall Trip to Chicago

14 MSA students had the opportunity to travel to Chicago, Illinois for the annual fall trip. The trip took place over five days, November 14th to the 18th.  The students had time to experience Chi-Town and see a whole new side of the sports industry.  They visited DePaul University, took a tour of the White Sox Stadium and met with front office employees, went to a Chicago Bulls game, and met with various people at a luncheon at the famous Fogo de Chao.

Spring 2010 Community Event
For the spring community service event, the MSA Society decided to do something a little different compared to any other they have ever been part of. The tragedy that Haiti has experienced really hit home with the students. They decided to dedicate the community service event to the Haitian relief effort. They ordered rubber bracelets that say, "Canisius MSA for Haiti" that they are currently selling for one dollar. The graduate students are selling the bracelets at many of the college's athletic events and various other locations. If you are interested in purchasing a bracelet or contributing to the fundraiser, please contact msainfo@canisius.edu.

Spring Trip Phoenix, Arizona

MSA students packed their bags and headed to Arizona for a week of learning, networking, and fun.  Students had the opportunity to work with the Fergie Jenkins Foundation where they helped to raise money for local charities during the Chicago Cubs Spring Training.  They had meetings scheduled with Sport Industry professionals from the Phoenix Suns, Coyotes, and Arizona State University.  The students also had the opportunity to attend a Suns game versus the Lakers and a Coyotes game versus Vancouver. Overall, the trip was a great success!
