Study Tracks

The mathematics major, which provides an in-depth study of theoretical math, is the springboard to a large number of careers and advanced degree work in many fields.

Math with a concentration in statistics, provides a solid foundation in theoretical and applied statistics as preparation for graduate study or a career as a statistician.

Math education  For students interested in teaching math at the elementary, middle or high school level

Dual majors, minors and concentrations  Because math provides a theoretical and computational background for many disciplines, double majors, minors and concentrations in other subjects are encouraged.

Pre-actuarial
Canisius is the only college in the area to offer courses which prepare students to take the core exams of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), while they are still undergraduates. Click here, to learn more.

Classroom Technology

Canisius College is dedicated to introducing technology into the classroom where appropriate. As part of this initiative, the Department of Mathematics uses computers in many of the courses. Calculus professors use the computer algebra program Mathematica, while others use graphing calculators such as the TI-86 to illustrate concepts and encourage students to investigate ideas independently. Mathematica can solve equations, graph functions, differentiate, and integrate. Its introduction gives the student a powerful tool to use in higher mathematics.

The use of computers is continued in some of the upper level courses, using Mathematica, the numeric program MATLAB, Cabri-Geometre for geometric constructions, or specialized programs such as MiniTabfor statistics. Most of the mathematics faculty use Macintosh computers, though IBM-compatible computers are used by our statisticians. However, both Mathematica and MATLAB are available for either platform.
