Canisius College has upgraded our satellite system with a Motorola digital 4DTV receiver which is connected to our C-band 10 foot steerable satellite antenna. We have also purchased a Motorola DSR-406 digital receiver and antenna (1.2 M Ku-band) dedicated for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) programming. The signal is sent through the Canisius College campus cable network on channel 17 to most classrooms and dormitories. Many large teleconferences are held in the Regis Room located in the Richard E. Winter '42 Student Center.
The Media Center has a Polycom 512 point-to-point Videoconferencing Viewstation. This system is a comprehensive appliance based videoconferencing group system which is capable of ISDN (H.320, video-15-30 frames per second at 384 kbps) via telephone lines which are located in OM-301. The fully integrated system includes a 27" TV monitor, codec, remote control camera, tabletop microphone with noise suppression/echo cancellation, multiple audio/video inputs/outputs, and is operated by a handheld remote control with a graphical user interface. We have successfully videoconferenced between Denver University, University of Texas El Paso and Alfred State College. The line fees for an ISDN call are approximately $1.00 per minute. The videoconferencing system could be used for distance learning, meetings, interviews, and guest lecturers without the time and expense of travel.
