Clinical laboratory science graduates are uniquely prepared for direct entry into the world of health care. Graduates of the Canisius program are qualified to sit for both of the nationally recognized accrediting exams, the American Society of Clinical Pathology's Board of Registry Exam and the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Certifying Exam, offered by the National Certifying Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel. The field is abundant with jobs nationwide for candidates who fulfill these qualifications.

  • Courtney Thompson ' 07 completed her senior internship at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, NY and is currently working in the Essential Service Laboratory of Women's and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
  • Karly Chesko '07 accepted a position in the Clinical Laboratory of Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.  Karly was an outstanding student-athlete at Canisius balancing the demanding clinical laboratory science curriculum and basketball.
Examples of employers are private and commercial laboratories, reference laboratories (forensic, clinical and environmental), pharmaceutical companies, transplant programs and research and development, and quality control organizations. Many clinical laboratory science graduates also attend graduate or professional school. Canisius alumni have entered medical and osteopathy schools, and pursued advanced degrees in education, business administration and physician's assistant programs.

Graduates with a clinical laboratory science degree from Canisius hold such positions as laboratory manager, transplant counselor, osteopath, physician's assistant and high school biology teacher. The BS in clinical laboratory science prepares graduates to pursue countless opportunities in the health care industry. Our graduates are well-respected and in high demand.

The program is registered as a licensure qualifying program by the New York State Department of Education, which means qualified students can obtain a New York State license upon graduation and a passing grade on the ASCP Board of Registry Exam - which has been designated by New York State as the official licensure exam.

According to the Department of Labor, the employment outlook for Clinical Laboratory Scientists is expected to grow more than the average for all occupations through the year 2010, with 43,000 additional jobs opening up during the next decade. Salaries, too, are on the rise. Many labs are now offering sign-on bonuses and very attractive benefit programs.
