Arabic
These courses are designed to enlighten students about Arabic language and Arab culture, and broaden students’ knowledge of Standard Arabic as a main written and spoken language among Arab nations in the Middle East and North Africa. Students learn how to write and speak standard Arabic, and how to relate to the Arab world through introducing many aspects of Arab culture. Courses are conducted mainly through practice lessons in class, small group activities, individual assignments and oral presentations (practice dialogues).

To speak Italian is to speak a language that has roots in one of the oldest languages in the world: Latin. Italian is commonly used in the world community in the areas of business, the arts, technology, manufacturing, fashion, education and international relations. Italy is one of the wealthiest democracies in the world, and many Italian companies have evolved from state-run organizations to private enterprises. This has opened up Italian markets to many foreign investments and companies.
Studying Italian at Canisius exposes students to a rich tradition of literature, cinema, linguistics, political thought, dialectology, and political, economic and social history that reaches back through hundreds of years of civilization. Some of the greatest thinkers and creators of the modern world - Galileo, Michelangelo, Vivaldi - were from Italy, and comprehension of Italian gives students direct access to the roots of their thought and creativity.

American Sign Language (ASL) is the dominant sign language of the Deaf community in the United States, in the English-speaking parts of Canada, and in parts of Mexico. ASL is a language distinct from spoken English—replete with its own syntax and grammar and supporting its own culture. These courses are ideal for students who wish to pursue studies in deaf education.
