ALANA Library

The ALANA* Library
The ALANA Library is a dynamic collection of books that is growing and changing. Over half of the books in the Library were donated by Professor Emeritus Jesse E. Nash, Jr. of the Sociology/Anthropology Department.

Dr. Daniel P. Starr, Professor Emeritus, Canisius College History Department, generously donated to OMP a number of magazines and newspapers (click here for list of Items). OMP will make these resources available to the campus community by placing the publications on reserve either in the Bouwhuis Library or in our area upon request.

The ALANA Library Database
This database contains information on the more than three hundred books in the Office of Multicultural Programs’ ALANA Library.  These books contain useful information for anyone interested in diverse cultures.  Not only are the books and authors listed in each database entry, but there is also a brief description of the book designed to give the potential reader an overview of the text so that they can see whether it is useful or not. The books are divided into categories based on the ALANA Community that the book addresses.  These categories are also color coded for your convenience.  The categories are:
African American -- Green
Latino/a American -- Red
Asian American -- Blue
Native American -- Purple
General -- Black

The General grouping contains the books that focus on two or more ALANA Communities or are not about a specific Community; there are also many books in this category that are excellent for providing quotations for papers or speeches.

A search engine has also been provided for the user to facilitate finding useful materials. You may search by topic, ethnic group, author, title, or any key words that would facilitate your search.

The books of the ALANA Library are available for public viewing, either in the Office of Multicultural Programs or on reserve in the Canisius College Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.  To view a book, either in the Office or in the Library, please contact the Office of Multicultural Program by phone at (716) 888-2787 or stop into the Office in Frisch 008.

The written descriptions in the Database were composed and compiled by Kevin Koch ’07, a student assistant in the Office of Multicultural Programs working through the Canisius Earning Excellence Program (CEEP). The CEEP program is administered and funded by the Canisius College Office of Academic Affairs.
