2007-2008 Archives Speaker Series ContinuesJoseph Bieron, PhD, professor
emeritus of chemistry, will give the second talk in the 2007-08 Archives Speaker Series on Friday, January 25, 2008 from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. on the second floor of the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library. Light refreshments will be served. “Postcard Views: A Walk Down Main Street Buffalo, New York, circa 1910” will be topic of this presentation.
Dr. Bieron and Paul J. McCarthy co-wrote this book which “offers a fascinating, historically accurate glimpse of Buffalo’s Main Street at the turn of the last century through postcard scenes.” Canisius alumna Jennifer Fecio McDoughall ’93 edited the book. The postcards, which appeared in 1907, were “a short-lived product of the emerging print technologies and existing postal regulations.” Through these pictorial representations Buffalo emerges as one of “the most progressive and vibrant cities of the time.”
The Archives will have some Buffalo-related books on display, including atlases, which Dr. Bieron used in verifying locations of buildings, streets, and scenes which area depicted in the postcards.
The Archives Speaker Series, held once each semester, features faculty and staff whose work relies on archival research. This program is sponsored by the Canisius College Archives and Special Collections with assistance from the Bouwhuis Library. For more information, contact Archivist
Kathleen DeLaney at Ext. 2916.
JSTOR Journals to StorageIn preparation for the Library Learning Commons, the 250+ JSTOR titles in the Bound Periodicals Collection have been moved to a Storage area on the lower level of the library. Here is what a JSTOR record in the library’s on-line catalog looks like:
http://cando.canisius.edu/record=b1176450If you’ll notice, the location of this journal is listed as “Storage” and there is a note in the “Library Has” field telling you to “Ask at Circulation Desk for bound volumes of this title.” If you require a print volume, it will be retrieved for you.
If you are browsing in the stacks and you can’t find a title you think should be there, again, ask at the Circulation Desk or check the on-line catalog to see if it’s a JSTOR title and request it. Complete back volumes of these titles are all available online through JSTOR. Current print issues to those JSTOR titles we subscribe to but which are not yet available online are shelved in Current Periodicals.
If you have any questions or concerns, or would like a complete list of these titles, please contact
Tom Evans at Ext. 2932.
