Canisius to Celebrate Black History Month
Canisius College will host several exciting events in February to celebrate Black History Month.  All events are free and open to the public.

Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City and president of SUNY College at Old Westbury, will speak at the Montante Cultural Center on Tuesday, February 3 at 8 p.m.  The event is co-sponsored by the college’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and the William H. Fitzpatrick Chair Lecture Series.  Seating is limited.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m.  For more information regarding the lecture, contact the Office of Public Relations at Ext. 2790 or click here.

The Canisius College Program in the African American Experience will welcome the legendary civil rights pioneer Rev. James Lawson Jr. to campus on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room.  Seating is limited.  Doors open at 7 p.m.  For more information, contact Dr. Bruce Dierenfield at Ext. 2683 or click here.

The IU Soul Revue will perform on Wednesday, February 18 in the Montante Cultural Center at 8 p.m.  Seating is limited.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The Revue is a full ensemble, featuring horns, a seven-piece rhythm section and at times, is augmented by strings and dance performances.


The IU Soul Revue, part of the Indiana University African American Arts Institute, delivers the sounds of timeless R & B, soul, funk and contemporary urban black popular music.  Performances feature original compositions, along with arrangements by Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Patti Labelle, Kelly Price, D’Angelo and Mary J. MLK Poetry Contest
There is still time for faculty, staff and administrators to enter the Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Contest.  First prize is $200; second prize is $100; and third prize is $50.  The deadline for entries is February 6.  For more information, contact Campus Ministry at Ext. 2420 or click

CSW to Host Dessert and Conversation
The Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) will host Dessert and Conversation on Tuesday, February 17 in the Regis Room South from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.  Bring your lunch and catch up on the latest campus news with your co-workers. Record Crowd Enjoys Wendy’s Kid’s Day

Billy the Buffalo (from the Buffalo Bills) leads fans in a cheer during the women’s basketball game against Colgate.

A record crowd of 1,465 local schoolchildren cheered the Canisius women’s basketball team to victory during the fourth annual Wendy’s Kid’s Day on January 6 at the Koessler Athletic Center.  The Griffs defeated Colgate by a score of 63-47.  Children from Buffalo public and parochial schools are invited each year to watch a Canisius basketball game. Prior to the event, Canisius student-athletes and cheerleaders visit local schools to get kids excited about the event and promote the importance of staying in school.  

Wendy’s Kid’s Day is organized by John Maddock, associate director of athletics for external affairs. 

Corporal Works of Mercy Series Welcomes National Advocates for the Homeless
The Canisius College Corporal Works of Mercy Lecture Series will welcome Nan Roman, president and CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, and Sister Mary Scullion, executive director of Project H.O.M.E., to campus on Thursday, January 22 at 8:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. Their lecture, entitled “Shelter the Homeless,” is free and open to the public.

The Corporal Works of Mercy Lecture Series was created by the Hon. John J. LaFalce ’61, Peter Canisius Distinguished University Professor, and is co-sponsored by the college’s Committee for the Promotion of Justice and the Office of Campus Ministry.  For more information, call Ext. 2138 or click here

Campus Ministry Hosts Pancake Breakfast to Benefit Alternative Spring Break Trip
Campus Ministry will host a pancake breakfast to raise money for the alternative spring break service trip to Appalachia on Sunday, February 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Regis Room and the Grupp Fireside Lounge.  Students who will be going on the trip will serve breakfast to guests. Tickets are $4 and are available through Campus Ministry. Or, if you know a student who will be going on the trip, you may also purchase a ticket from them. ArtsCanisius Presents Fine Arts Week February 9-13
ArtsCanisius’ will present its 7th annual Fine Arts Week, February 9-13, 2004.  All events are open to the public, many are free of charge.  The week will include various musical performances, lectures and studio art shows. Canisius Employees Celebrate the Season at Annual Holiday Luncheon
Hundreds of Canisius employees packed the dining hall on December 23 for the annual holiday luncheon.  Party guests enjoyed a turkey dinner, giveaways, live holiday music, good conversation and a visit from Santa Claus himself!

The previous record for attendance at a Canisius women’s basketball game was 708, set on January 8, 1984 when Canisius played Charleston.
