Montante Cultural Center Wins Architectural Award

The Montante Cultural Center has once again been honored for architectural excellence. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently recognized Cannon Design with a 2004 Honor Award for Interiors for its transformation of the building from an historic Byzantine-Lombardic church into a multi-purpose cultural center, while preserving its integrity and beauty. Seven other projects from around the country and in Rotterdam, The Netherlands also received this distinction.
While the Montante has received awards from the Western New York and New York State AIA chapters, this is its first award from the national organization. Canisius Community Mourns the Loss of Rev. Maloney, Rev. Jones
In December, the college community lost two important religious and academic figures.
Rev. Edward Francis Maloney, S.J., theologian and superior of Loyola Hall at Fordham University, died on December 23 after a lengthy illness. Father Maloney was a member of the Jesuit community at Canisius College from 1957-1978. He served many roles at Canisius including assistant academic dean, academic dean and dean of faculty. He was appointed academic vice president in 1968 and executive academic vice president in 1973. He also served as acting president in 1975 during the sabbatical of Rev. James M. Demske, S.J. Father Maloney left the college in 1978 to serve as the special consulate to the provincial of the New York Providence of the Society of Jesus, who was at the time, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J.
Father Maloney was known at Canisius for his deep love of the college, his constant insistence on high quality education and the importance of religious and moral values. He was renowned among Buffalo’s country clubs for his single digit golf handicap. Father Maloney was 80. To read a copy of the homily given at Father Maloney's funeral, click here.
Rev. Thomas H. Jones, adjunct professor of religious studies, died unexpectedly on December 26, 2003. Rev. Jones taught at Canisius since 1998. He was also the assisting priest at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Tonawanda. At Christmastime, Rev. Jones was known for his re-enactment of the legend of St. Nicholas in full bishop’s costume.
Faculty, staff and students remember him as a popular and personable figure who loved his work both on campus and at his church. Father Jones is survived by his wife and three children. A memorial service for the campus community will be held on a date to be announced. Father Jones was 47.
Women’s Business Center to Host Open House
The newly-established Women’s Business Center (WBC) at Canisius College will host an open house from Tuesday, January 27 – Saturday, January 31, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. each day; extended hours are scheduled for Thursday, January 29 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. During this time, the WBC will be open to the public for tours. Informational material about the Women’s Business Center and its offerings will also be available. The Women’s Business Center is housed in Demerly Hall.
The WBC opened in December to support the success of women entrepreneurs and small business owners in the city of Buffalo. It is funded by a five-year, $750,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Canisius will also raise $600,000 in cash and in-kind gifts over the next five years to support the center. For more information about the open house at the Canisius College Women’s Business Center, call Ext. 6500 or click here.
Canisius Board of Trustees Restructures Committees
The college’s board of trustees decided at its December 8 meeting to reduce and restructure its standing committees as a result of a self-assessment conducted by the board this fall. Under the new structure, the board will have five committees that will meet during the morning preceding the full board meeting. Those committees are:
- Finance and Facilities (combining the previous Finance & Budget and Building & Grounds committees)
- Academics (combining the previous Academic Affairs & Faculty Welfare and Enrollment committees)
- Student Life
- Institutional Advancement (formerly Development)
- Mission & Identity
While the number of committees will be reduced, the time allotted for committee meetings will expand from two to three-and-a-half hours to enable trustees to gain a more in-depth look at strategic issues in each area.
“Our trustees have expressed a sincere desire to become more engaged in the life of the college, and gain a higher level of knowledge and information necessary to make informed judgments about policy issues,” said Canisius President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. “We think that the work of the board is done most effectively in the committees and this change should make our committees more effective.”
Trustees will be asked to serve on one of the five committees each year and they will be able to move to other committees during their term on the board. The board of trustees consists of 35 members, of whom eight are Jesuits. Of the 27 lay members, 13 are alumni of Canisius College, including the board’s chair, James F. Lyons '56. The board meets four times each year in October, December, March and May. The new committees are expected to be in place for the March meeting.
WNY Writing Project Receives $10,000 Grant

The WNYWP was selected from more than 150 sites to receive this funding.
The grant will be used to fund the WNYWP’s efforts to improve the teaching of writing in the Buffalo City Schools (grades K-8). WNYWP fellows will work with 20-25 teachers to improve their writing skills and their teaching of writing across the curriculum.
