Open House Attracts Record Number

Martin Schechtman, director of the Business Internship Program, speaks with prospective students Penelope Lips, director of admissions, talks with a student and her parents.

Saturday's Open House was a smashing success! More than 540 prospective students (that's a 43 percent increase in student attendance from last year) had the opportunity to tour the campus as well as meet with members of the faculty and admissions and financial aid representatives.  Lisa Scott '92, Channel 4 News anchor, served as M.C. for the day.  The Honorable Mayor Anthony Masiello '69 and Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. also spoke to the guests about Canisius.

"I want to thank everyone who participated in this event and for the extra effort to make this year's event a positive experience for our guests - the campus was immaculate," stated Anthony Bellia, dean of enrollment management.  "Lets keep the momentum going and make this an exceptional recruiting year."

Kudos to all those who helped with this year's Admissions Open House!

Canisius Web Site Wins Top Spot
Kudos to the Canisius Web team and Admissions Office!  The Canisius College Web site admissions pages were rated number one by the Red Dot Group's Enrollment Power Index (EPI TM) of top colleges and universities admissions pages in the United States.

Canisius beat out nearly 2,000 colleges and universities of all sizes including Duke University, the University of Iowa, the Berklee College of Music, the University of Connecticut, and Michigan State University.

EPI measures how a Web site takes students from prospect to applicant through a variety of pre-determined standards.  EPI is an indicator that a college or university admissions page reached or exceeded high standards of Web functionality and design.

Evaluation criteria included the prominence of admissions link; admissions page appeal; on-line access to application materials; ability to pay fees on-line; helpful links to college entrance sites; ease of navigation; and the ability to contact the admissions office.

The Admissions Web site was created and designed by Chuck Pustelnik, Web editor; Ann-Marie Clare, assistant director of admissions; Michael George, director of admissions volunteers and Debra Park, director of public relations in association with LiquidMatrix Inc. of Orchard Park, NY, using their Active Campus TM product.

The Red Dot Group, a firm based out of Lee's Summit, Missouri, provides innovative technology and consulting to higher education in an effort to help colleges and universities nationwide streamline and strengthen their admissions Web sites.

www.canisius.edu is growing
If you have not done so yet, take some time and navigate through the alumni relations and development pages - the newest editions to
www.canisius.edu, which were launched on October 16.

The alumni site is an interactive, user friendly way to keep alumni from across the country and around the world connected to each other and their alma mater.  By logging-in in one simple step, alumni and staff can access a discussion board and chat about athletics, campus improvements, the Web site and much, much more; view a photo gallery, register on-line to attend alumni events; and access an alumni directory. All visitors to the site have the ability to mail electronic Canisius greeting cards and help the college locate lost alumni. While visiting this site take a minute to nominate a co-worker to be featured in the faculty-staff spotlight! To view the alumni site click here!

The development site allows visitors to give or pledge a gift to the college on-line.  The site provides information about the benefits of giving a gift; explains the various types of gifts; and walks visitors through making their donation.  To view the development site click here!

ITS Issues Virus Warning
The SirCam virus is spreading once again on campus. If you receive an E-mail from someone you do not know and the E-mail contains an attachment, do NOT open the attachment - do NOT even read the message.  You should treat with caution any E-mail which contains an attachment, even if the message is from someone you know.  Delete these messages and do NOT click on the attachment! If you should click on the attachment accidentally, DO NOT shut down your computer and immediately contact the ITS Help Desk at ext. 2299.

Messages with the SirCam virus will have the following characteristics:

Subject Line: The subject of the E-mail will be random and will be the same as the file name of the attachment in the email.  The line may also be blank or contain a phrase like "want your opinion" or "need your advice"

From Line: The line could be blank or it may be from prodigy.net.mx or even appear to be from someone you know.

Attachment: The attachment will have a file name which is often similar to the subject line and the file extension will usually be  .doc.bat  or  .doc.pif  and will be over 200 kb in size.

Message:  The message body will be semi-random, but will always contain one of the following two lines as the first and last sentences of the message --  "Hi! How are you?" or "See you later. Thanks."  Between these two sentences, some of the following text may appear:  "I send you this file in order to have your advice" - "I hope you can help me with this file that I send" - "I hope you like the file I send you" - "This is the file with the information that you ask for"

How Canisius is Combating the SirCam Virus:
Earlier this week, ITS installed a "virus E-mail gateway" which is a combination of hardware and software designed to keep viruses from entering the college computer systems from off-campus.  Now we need to clean the viruses off the dorm-student computers and extend the virus E-mail gateway so that it blocks infected E-mail which originates on-campus.  Even when that is done, no such 'firewall' will be 100% effective but the number of infections should decrease considerably.

If you have any questions please contact the ITS Department at ext. 2299.

George Emery, associate director of the library access services, poses with one of the new wireless laptops. George was instrumental in the development and implementation of the library's wireless lab.
Not only is Canisius wired, we're now wireless!  The Bouwhuis Library now has wireless capabilities, enabling the Canisius community to connect to the Internet and the library catalog and other resources from anywhere in the library. Canisius is the only school in Buffalo to offer wireless technology.  Over the summer the library purchased a Gateway Mobile Wireless Lab which included sixteen Gateway Solo 5300 laptop computers.  The laptop computers contain a special wireless network card that connects into the campus network at several wireless access points located on the ceiling of the library.

"Using laptops saves space and with literally thousands of journals available in full text over the network, as well as excellent traditional book and journal collection, the library seemed like a natural place to integrate networked computers," stated Dr. Joel Cohen, associate vice president for library and information technology services.  "Wireless access gives faculty and students the freedom to work at a quiet table or to be near the books they need to use for their research. "

Any laptop computer with a compatible wireless access card can access the library's wireless network. If you do not have your own laptop you can borrow one of the library's Gateway Solo 5300 wireless laptop computers.  The laptops, located at the library circulation desk, can be used for a three-hour period.

For more information or for wireless laptop circulation policies, click here.

Acceptable Use Policy
The college has a new Acceptable Use Policy, which explains the conditions for using Canisius' computers and network services.  The policy replaces the Computer and Network Facilities-Conditions for use and Resident Student Network Connection Policy.  Please click
here to familiarize yourself with the Acceptable Use Policy.

On the Move

Veronica Serwacki, secretary for the dean of arts and sciences, unpacks in her new office in Bagen Hall.    Patricia Grasso, secretary for public relations and publications, is still smiling despite all her boxes that she needs to unpack in Lyons Hall.

More offices are on the move!  Public Relations, Publications and the Web Offices are now located on the second floor of Lyons Hall.  The dean's offices for the College of Arts and Sciences, the Wehle School of Business, Statler Institute of Hospitality Management and the Graduate Business Office are at home on the second floor of Bagen Hall.  All telephone and fax extensions remain the same.

Did You Know
