Jubilee Year Celebration Begins

On December 3, Jesuits throughout the world marked the start of the Jubilee Year to renew the spirit of three of the founders of the Society of Jesus: Saint Francis Xavier, Blessed Pierre Favre and Saint Ignatius Loyola. Founded in 1870 by German Jesuits, Canisius College joins in this celebration.
Members of the college community kicked off the Jubilee Year on December 2 with a reception in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. Paula M. McNutt, PhD, dean of Arts and Sciences and Rev. John P. Bucki, S.J., director of campus ministry, presented the college’s new icon of St. Ignatius Loyola, which will be displayed at various locations on campus during the Jubilee Year. During December and January, it will be displayed in the Andrew L. Bouwhius Library, along with a collection of books that represent the Jesuit tradition.
From January 12 – 15, faculty and staff are welcome to personally celebrate the Jubilee Year at an Ignatian Retreat offered by the Office of Campus Ministry at Mt. Carmel, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Many Jubilee Year commemorations at Canisius will be integrated into regular college events, such as lectures, ArtsCanisius musical performances and International Fest. The Jubilee Year will be celebrated through December 3, 2006. For more information, click here for the Campus Ministry Web site.
Happy Holidays 
The Christmas tree decorated and lit during "Christmas in the Quad" presented by the Undergraduate Student Association (USA) on December 6 is more than 20 feet tall and stands in front of the Palisano Pavilion. The ornaments on the tree represent various student organizations on campus. The event was sponsored by the Senate Programming Board (SPB) with the Undergraduate Student Association (USA) as co-sponsor.

Canisius College Annual Holiday Party 
Here's a preview of the grand prize raffles for this year's holiday party. First prize is a $100 Forever Elmwood gift certificate, second prize is a Polaroid portable DVD player and third prize is a Phillips wall mountable micro hi fi system.
Join your Canisius co-workers to celebrate the season at the Annual Holiday Party on Friday, December 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the Peter Gust Economu Dining Hall. Enjoy a delicious brunch, enter to win exciting grand prizes and watch a continuous feed Power Point presentation of photos from “Christmas Past” projected on a screen.

Make the Holidays Brighter for Those in Need
There’s still time to make the holidays brighter for those in need right here in the city of Buffalo. The Office of Public Safety is accepting new or gently used warm clothing, blankets, toys and non-perishable food items. Items can be dropped off in Bosch Hall (Public Safety Office) and will be delivered to St. Mary of St. Mary of Sorrows Church on Guilford Street in Buffalo.

Monetary donations are also still being accepted for the Campus Ministry Holiday Food Drive. Teams of Canisius volunteers solicited donations of non-perishable food outside several area supermarkets on Canisius Community Day on November 19.
Checks made payable to “Canisius College Food Drive” may be dropped off in the Office of Campus Ministry, Old Main 207. For more information about the Canisius College Food Drive, contact Joe Van Volkenburg in the Office of Campus Ministry at Ext. 2875.
The deadline for donations for both drives is Friday, December 16.
Holiday Shutdown
The college will be closed, except for essential operating personnel, from Monday, December 26 until Monday, January 2. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, January 3.
ROTC Classroom Dedicated in Lt. Col. Crowe’s Memory
Lt. Col. Terrence Crowe’s family was on hand for the unveiling of the plaque and framed memorabilia in his memory at the ROTC Awards Ceremony on December 8. Lt. Col. James Soos, chair of military science, far right, looks on.
The ROTC classroom where Lt. Col. Terrence Crowe taught cadets in the Canisius College Golden Griffin Battalion has been dedicated in his memory. Now designated as the Canisius College Center for Military Leadership, the classroom will feature a bronze plaque and a large glass frame including a photo of Crowe taken in Iraq and some of his military memorabilia.
The plaque and frame were unveiled at the ROTC Awards Ceremony on December 8 at the Montante Cultural Center. Crowe, assistant professor of military science at Canisius, was killed on June 7, 2005 while serving as part of offensive operations in Tal Afar, Iraq. He was 44 years old.
Canisius College Archives Screensaver

The Canisius College Archives is offering a CD of archival college photos to all interested faculty, staff and administrators. The CD, created by Karen E. Bordonaro, PhD, associate director, library/archives & information literacy, comes with detailed instructions on how to set up a slideshow screensaver of the photos on your computer. Hamlin Park Community Dinner
More than 100 Hamlin Park neighbors were treated to a community dinner hosted by the Canisius College Undergraduate Student Association (USA) on Saturday, November 12 in the Penfold Commons of the Palisano Pavilion. Entertainment was provided by the Canisius College Griffin Squad Step Team and the Gospel Ensemble. The Hamlin Park Community Dinner, an annual event, is an opportunity for the students and neighbors to get to know one another in an informal setting.
Early Childhood Center School #17 Students Visit “The Wonder Down Under” at Canisius College 
Several hundred students from Early Childhood Center School #17 on Delavan Avenue visited The Wonder Down Under, a mini zoo in the Canisius College Health Science Building constructed by zoo biology students of Michael Noonan, PhD, professor of biology/psychology. More than 1,300 people visited The Wonder Down Under during its 10-day run.
Stress-Less Day for Faculty and Staff 
Joan M. Kader, technician for financial aid, blows her cares away with bubbles at Stress-less Day for faculty and staff on Friday, November 12 in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. The event, which featured various activities designed to reduce stress, was presented by the STEPS Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women, and sponsored by the Human Resources Department, Ellen O. Conley PhD, vice president for student affairs and the Office of Faculty Development.
Native American Sweat Lodge Seminar 
Participants in the Native American Sweat Lodge seminar held on Saturday, November 12 at Canisius complete construction of the lodge’s frame. The seminar was led by Donald Moccasin, a Sicangu Lakota from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, and sponsored by Keith R. Burich, PhD, Peter Canisius Distinguished Teaching Professor.
Committee on Status of Women Hosts Dessert and Conversation
Happy New Year! Did you make any resolutions? Talk about your New Year’s traditions and resolutions, or just sit back and enjoy lunch when the Committee on the Status of Women hosts Dessert and Conversation on Tuesday, January 10 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Regis Room South. Public Safety Adds New Van to Shuttle Fleet

The new van runs from the Delavan Townhouses to the Student Center. College employees may use the shuttle service (space permitting), which runs continuously from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shuttle signs are clearly posted at the Delevan Townhouses, the Health Science Building, the Hughes Street entrance to Old Main and near the parking ramp. After 5 p.m., employees may utilize the point-to-point shuttle, which will transport them directly to their car.

Annual Fund Wins Silver CASE Award
Kudos to the Office of Annual Fund, which received a Silver CASE District II Accolades Award in the Direct Mail Category. The award is for Journeys @ Canisius, an E-solicitation created with Macromedia Flash, which was sent to young alumni. Journeys @ Canisius was designed and created by Brian Palumbo '05.
Congratulations to Amy Johnson, director, annual fund; Kirsten Reppert, assistant director, annual fund; Jenn Paterson, director of creative services, and Chuck Pustelnik, Web editor who worked on the project. Annual fund will accept the award at a ceremony on February 6, 2006.
Soos Promoted to Lieutentant Colonel 
Lt. Col. James H. Soos, chair of military science, is pinned with silver oak leaves, the insignia of the rank of lieutentant colonel, by his wife, son and daughter during the ROTC Awards Ceremony at the Montante Cultural Center on December 8.
Kruly Appointed to Erie County Control BoardState Comptroller Alan Hevesi has appointed Kenneth C. Kruly '70, director of governmental relations, to the Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority. Kruly replaces Janet Penska who resigned from the authority board in early December.
Prior to Canisius, Kruly served as the first deputy Erie County clerk from 2000-2003. He was Erie County budget director from 1997-1999.
“Ken Kruly oversaw Erie County’s budget and successfully helped reduce property taxes and long-term debt, eliminated short-term debt and improved the County’s bond rating,” says Hevesi. “I am confident that he will put the needs of the people of Erie County first and will serve on the board with distinction.”
Murphy Promoted to Lieutenant 
James A. Murphy, III is sworn in as lieutenant by Gary Everett, director of public safety, as Ellen O. Conley, PhD, vice president for student affairs, looks on. A ceremony was held in Conley's office on December 7.
Hurley Named National Chair of JAA
John J. Hurley '78, vice president for college relations, has been elected to a two-year term as the national chair of the Jesuit Advancement Administrators (JAA), a professional organization of advancement professionals serving Jesuit higher education in the United States. He has served on the JAA Executive Committee since 2002.
JAA represents more than 1,000 advancement professionals engaged in development, alumni relations, public relations, publications, Website development and government relations in the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. It provides professional development opportunities through an annual national conference at one of the member campuses.

Chartwells Announces Management Changes
After five years of overseeing the dining service operation for Canisius College, Chartwells has promoted Bob Mottola to district manager. In addition to Canisius, Mottola will support eight college and university accounts in Western New York and Pennsylvania. His office will continue to be located on the Canisius campus. John Tychinski will replace Mottola as director. Tychinski joined Chartwells and Canisius in May of 2003. He previously served as the associate director and operations manager responsible for the Dining Hall. Janet Elis is the new associate director. Elis joined the Chartwells/Canisius team in November of 2000 from UB dining services. She is responsible for the operations of Old Main, Upper Deck and Street Side Cafe.
