Gress Delivers Keynote Address at UN Global Forum

Edward J. Gress, PhD, professor of accounting, delivered the keynote speech at the first-ever Global Forum for Responsible Management Education, which was held at and hosted by the United Nations, in December. The two-day forum, attended by more than 250 people from all over the world, included discussion about how academic institutions can teach a new generation of corporate leaders to value global social responsibility in their work.   It was the first meeting of its kind between the United Nations and the academic world.

In his address, Gress stated that “The forum could not have occurred at a better time, since the global financial crisis should serve as an impetus to business schools to teach the principles of responsible management education.”

The Global Forum commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), a UN-backed initiative launched in 2007.  PRME is a set of six guiding principles designed to help schools integrate corporate responsibility and sustainability in the education of current and future business managers.  PRME principles include concepts related to human rights, the environment, anti-corruption, poverty and financial sustainability.
