Canisius Celebrates Black History Month

Scheuer Discusses Terrorism, Osama bin Laden’s Influence

More than 500 people filled the Montante Cultural Center to hear Michael F. Scheuer ’74, news terrorism analyst and former senior Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer give a lecture entitled “America, Osama bin Laden and the War that has Barely Begun.” Scheuer discussed bin Laden’s strong influence on the Muslim world and militant movement, U.S. policies implemented in the Middle East and potential solutions to the U.S. situation in the Middle East. Marine Mammal Expert to Lecture at Canisius
Ron A. Kastelein, PhD, an internationally-known expert on marine mammal research and director of Seamarco, will give two lectures at Canisius College. Seamarco is a company that conducts research and rehabilitation efforts on stranded marine mammals and on those entangled in human fishing gear.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
On Thursday, February 15 at 1 p.m. in HSC 108, Kastelein will give a lecture on “Exploring the Acoustic World of Marine Mammals: What They Can Hear and How We Know it.”
On Friday, February 16 at 12:30 p.m., Kastelein will discuss, “Porpoise Entanglement in Gillnets, Defining the Problem, Defining the Solution,” in the Regis Room South. Steps to Wellness Presentation on Holistic Nutrition
On Wednesday, February 21 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Regis Room South, Jean E. Franklin, PhD, adjunct professor of physical education and health will give a presentation on holistic nutrition. Her presentation is part of the “Steps to Wellness” brown bag lunch series created by the STEPS Committee, which focuses on proper nutrition and exercise while at work. Chartwells will offer a Balanced Choice lunch for $3. Lunch options include fresh roasted tomato and choice of walnut, apple and chicken salad with lo-fat raspberry dressing; Mediterranean salad with poached salmon or Mediterranean Salad. Campus Ministry to Offer “At-Home” Retreats
In light of the upcoming season of Lent and the desire to renew our experience in the Jesuit tradition, the Office of Campus Ministry invites all faculty and staff to consider making an “at-home” retreat during Lent. The retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits. Participants commit to daily prayer or meditation and meet weekly with a spiritual director. World War II French Film Screening
The Canisius College Department of Modern Languages and the Alliance Français of Buffalo presents a screening of “La France Divisée,” (France Divided) a documentary film in French with English subtitles, on Sunday, February 25 in the Regis Room. The screening, which begins at 3 p.m., is free and open to the public.
“La France Divisée,” which explores the two sides of France during World War II, was produced and directed by Eileen M. Angelini, PhD, chair and associate professor of modern languages and Barbara P. Expert on Shoulder Injury Rehab to Speak
Tim L. Uhl, PhD, ATC, PT, associate professor and director of the musculoskeletal research laboratory at the University of Kentucky, will speak on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Regis Room. His lecture, entitled “Assessment and Management of Scapular Dysfunction in Shoulder Injuries,” is free and open to the public.

Take a Trip Around the World at 18th Annual International Fest
The Office of International Student Programs will host “International Fest” on Friday, March 2 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. CSW Hosts Dessert and Conversation
The Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) invites all women and men to catch up with their co-workers at Dessert and Conversation on Thursday, March 8 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Student Center Conference Room. Bring or buy your lunch, dessert and beverages are provided. Each month has a different theme and a prize drawing will be held. Contemporary Writers Series Welcomes Acclaimed Poet
Celebrated Poet Eamon Grennan visits Canisius on Thursday, March 8 for The Contemporary Writers Series’ fourth annual Hassett Reading. The event, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, is free and open to the public. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Grennan has published several volumes of poetry, including Still Life with Waterfall, which received the 2003 Lenore Marshall Award for Poetry, and his latest collection, The Quick of It. Head of Domestic Violence Bureau to Speak at Women’s Studies Luncheon
Lisa Bloch Rodwin, chief of the Erie County District Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Bureau, will be guest speaker at the annual Women’s Studies Spring Luncheon on Friday, March 9 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 pm in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. The I. Joan Lorch Awards, which recognize individuals at the college who have made a significant contribution to women on the campus, will be presented. This year’s recipients are: Susan A. Fischer, associate campus minister, administrator award; Veronica A. Serwacki, secretary, dean of arts and sciences, staff award; Jane E. Fisher, PhD, associate professor of English and director of Women’s studies, faculty award and Shirley Sackey ’07, student award. The award is named after its first recipient, Dr. I. Joan Lorch, professor emerita of biology, who was a driving force behind the establishment of the college’s Women’s Studies Program. Tickets are $10. Canisius Community Day is April 21
Mark your calendars – the next Canisius College Community Day is Saturday, April 21 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will help local non-profit organizations with various projects.
