College Embarks on Electrical Energy Reduction Effort
In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing the term “C3E” used around campus. What does it mean? It’s an abbreviation for “Canisius College Conserves Energy.” Thanks to a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), a campus-wide conservation effort is underway at Canisius.  Gary Lew, senior facilities operations manager, is the on-campus contact for the C3E program.  All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate.

The C3E program consists of two main efforts: technical changes and awareness.  Ecology and Environment, Inc., (E & E) has conducted technical energy-usage reviews/inventories of several college buildings.   Facilities Management personnel will be working with these findings to determine what and when changes will be made.  Changes you may notice implemented under C3E include changes in light bulb types, installation of room occupancy sensors, and decreases in the amount of light bulbs in some fixtures.  In addition, light fixtures in areas significantly illuminated by natural light during much of the day soon may be equipped with photo-sensing switches that turn off the artificial lighting when natural lighting is sufficient.

Adjusting the type and amount of bulbs used in college light fixtures, as well as the installation of photo-sensing switches to turn lights on and off are two ways the C3E project will help conserve electrical energy.

C3E's awareness component consists of raising the awareness level of faculty, students and campus operations staff members concerning energy use posed by their respective on-campus activities.  E&E has been holding brief seminars on campus for students, faculty and staff to introduce everyone to the program. There will also be a Web page on-line in late April that will provide relevant information concerning program goals, energy-saving tips and schedules for upcoming seminars. Watch the NetGazette for details.

In addition to the array of technical changes, E & E has made specific operational recommendations as to how the college can further reduce its energy usage -- simple, easy steps that anyone can, and should, do.  For example:

  • On your computer monitor, disable the screen saver mode; use sleep mode instead.  (Call the Help Desk at Ext. 2299 if you require assistance with this.)
  • Turn off electrical devices when not in use, such as monitors, computers, room lights, office lights and overhead projectors.

These simple steps can reduce the college’s energy requirements by tens of thousands of dollars annually.   The savings translate to less demand for power generation, which will help preserve the environmental quality of Western New York.  More details on the environmental benefits of energy use reduction will be presented in an upcoming article in the NetGazette

LIS NEWS

Steps Being Taken to Improve Internet Service on Campus
Canisius College has been experiencing some Internet interruptions from its Internet Service Provider (ISP). As a result, the college is seeking another ISP. Bid documents were released on February 25 and a decision on the new ISP is expected by March 12. Since it is likely that the new ISP will need to provision additional cable and electronic equipment for campus, and since both the old provider and Canisius College must take steps to ensure continuity of service, cutover will likely not take place until late March or April. Questions may be directed to Dr. Joel A. Cohen, associate vice president for library & information services, at cohen@canisius.edu or Ext. 2909.

New Liaison Teams for Academic Departments
With the increase in the use of information systems on campus, and the subsequent increase the kinds of things that the library and information services area handles, it is sometimes difficult to know where to turn when you have a question, a problem or an idea that you’d like to pursue.   In order to facilitate LIS support for instruction and research, we have formed three teams composed of staff from the library, the media center and ITS.  Each team is assigned to one of the college's schools.  Any one from the team will be happy to hear from you, talk to you about your ideas and direct you to the services you require.

For help with immediate needs and requests for library, ITS and media services, you may continue to call the ITS Help Desk (Ext. 2299) and the library reference desk (Ext. 2910).  But when you don’t know who to call....contact your Liaison Team!  For more information, see Your New Liaison Team.

New Terrorism Titles
The library has some powerful new books on terrorism.  One of them is particularly noteworthy: In the Wake of 9/11: The Psychology of Terror.  It was written by three renowned professors of psychology who had formulated the Terror Management Theory back in 1984.  The authors used this psychological model to explain human reactions to that infamous September day in 2001.  The book provides studies and explanations of the causes and consequences of 9/11.  The lengthy discussions of human behavior add to its already interesting perspective. This book is presently located on the new book shelf with the call number HV6432 .P67 2003. The library also has:

  • REF HV6431 .K883 2003, Encyclopedia of Terrorism.
  • Curric Center LT7348 .W47 2002, With Their Eyes: September 11th, the View from a High School at Ground Zero. This is a book of writings from high school students about their experiences at ground zero.

Other titles of interest may be found by searching CanDO by the keywords “September 11” or “terrorism.”
