Canisius Women’s Basketball Team Wins MAAC, Earns Trip to NCAA Tournament

The entire coaching staff and team gathered Sunday, March 13 with members of the Canisius community at the Palisano Pavilion to watch the tournament's selection show, broadcast live on ESPN.
The Canisius College Women’s Basketball team will play the Duke University Blue Devils on Sunday, March 20 at in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, CJRN 710AM and via the Internet at www.gogriffs.com.
Join Canisius fans at Pearl Street Grill and Brewery to watch the game live on ESPN2 at noon. The first drink is included and light snacks will be provided, additional food and beverages will be available at cost. The team’s exciting victory over Marist College (60-59) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship game earned the women a slot in the NCAA Tournament. It will be their first time in the NCAA Tournament as a Division I program, as well as the team’s first MAAC championship in program history.
Becky Zak '06 and Jessica Steeves '06 earned all-tournament honors for their contribution to the MAAC championship win. Zak had 12 points, three assists and two steals and was named the tournaments most valuable player. Steeves posted eight points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.

Search Committee for Ice Hockey Head Coach Announced
Canisius College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., has announced a search committee for the position of head men’s ice hockey coach. The committee will conduct a comprehensive search to attract and identify leading candidates for the position. Its objective is to have a new head hockey coach in place by April 1.
The search committee is comprised of 10 members including four community and business leaders. They are: John Walsh, chairman and CEO of Walsh Insurance Group. Walsh played hockey at Yale University and has coached youth hockey; James Wadsworth, partner at Hodgson Russ LLP. Wadsworth played hockey at Princeton University; James Patrick, Sabres defenseman and NHL veteran of 21 seasons. Patrick ranks in the NHL’s top 40 on the all-time games played list and is 12th among defensemen. He also played at the University of North Dakota; and Frank Downing Jr., president of Towne Automotive. Downing was a four-year letter winner for hockey at the University of Michigan, team captain during his senior year, and named to the Big Ten and Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic teams.
Canisius alumnus and basketball player Terrence M. Connors ’68, founding partner of Connors and Vilardo, and Michael M. Gilbert ’90, director of public relations for the Buffalo Sabres, will also serve on the search committee, as will four staff from the Canisius College Athletics Department: Jennifer Zeh, senior associate athletics director; Kirsten Clark, assistant to the senior associate athletics director; Marc Gignac, director of athletic communications; and Shawn O’Rourke, associate dean of graduate and Canadian programs and adjunct professor of sports administration.
Bene Merenti Celebration Set for April 22
Canisius faculty, staff and administrators who have reached 20 or more years of service will be honored at this year’s Bene Merenti celebration on Friday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Canisius Community Day
Canisius faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to participate in Canisius Community Day on Saturday, April 23 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Organized by the Office of Campus Ministry, Canisius Community Day is an opportunity for members of the college community to help local non-profit groups get ready for spring. Lunch will be provided.
Some of the agencies to be assisted include Benedict House, Friends of the Buffalo Niagara River 2005 Beach Sweep, the Food Bank of WNY, Habitat for Humanity, Hearts for the Homeless Soup Kitchen, the St. Vincent DePaul Dining Room, Vive LaCasa and the We Care Neighborhood Community Center. Last year more than 130 Canisius students and staff members lent a hand during Canisius Community Day.

CSW to Host Dessert and Conversation

Peace Prayer to be Held March 18
Come pray for world peace on Friday, March 18 at 12:20 p.m. on the first floor of Old Main. A brief, 15-minute prayer will be held around the peace pole to commemorate the first anniversary of the war in Iraq, as well as to pray for an end to violent conflict throughout the world.
Canisius College Ambassadorial Series Welcomes Gioia
On Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., the Canisius College Ambassadorial Lecture Series welcomes the Hon. Anthony H. Gioia, former U.S. ambassador to Malta and his wife, Donna Gioia, to the Grupp Fireside Lounge. Their lecture is entitled "The Work of an Ambassador and Spouse." Easter Flower Memorials
The Office of Campus Ministry invites members of the Canisius community to make a donation for Easter flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one. A $5 is requested and the flower will be placed in Christ the King Chapel during the Easter season. Names of those remembered will be listed in the back of the chapel. There will be no Holy Week services on campus, except the regular 11:45 a.m. Mass on Easter Sunday. There will be no 9:30 p.m. Mass on Easter Sunday and no daily Masses during spring break. A priest will be available for individual confession on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22 in the chapel reconciliation room from 12-12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
Web Tool Training to be Offered this Spring
The Canisius Web office will three hold training sessions in April for those who want to learn more about building Web pages for their academic or administrative departments.
A session on the Canisius Web tool will be held Thursday, April 7 at 1 p.m. in Wehle 305. This session focus on how to use the campus-wide Web tool and how simple it is to build and maintain department pages. It is also recommended for those currently using the tool, but may need a refresher.
Learn how to use Advanced HTML on Thursday, April 14 at 1 p.m. in Wehle 305. The focus on Advanced HTML that Web tool users can use to supplement functions of the text editor. It will cover coding basics, other linking options (in relation to directory structures), drop-down menus and how to build your own HTML forms.
The session on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. in Lyons 118 will address how to write content for your Web site. Topics will include appropriate writing styles for the Web, knowing your audience and best practices in writing for the Web.

Shoes for Shelter 5K Run/Walk
It's that time of the year again! Canisius College and BlueCross BlueShield present the 2005 Shoes for Shelter 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, April 10 at noon in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Registration begins at 9 a.m., the one-mile fun walk starts at 11:30 a.m. and the 5k race begins at noon. Bring an extra pair of sneakers or shoes to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Last year, more than 1,000 pairs of shoes were collected!
The first 400 registered participants will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt designed by Jennifer Paterson BA '95, MS '01, director of creative services. Prizes will be awarded to the first place male and female finishers, the top three finishers in each age category, and to the top finishers from Canisius students, faculty, staff and alumni. The cost to register is $17 for adults or $10 for children 14 and under, Canisius students or BlueCross BlueShield employees.

Conversations in Christ and Culture Lecture Series Hosts Speakers
The Conversations in Christ and Culture Lecture Series will host two speakers in April:
Lamin Sanneh, PhD, the D. Willis James Professor of Missions and World Christianity at Yale University, will present a lecture entitled "Christianity Outside the West" on Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room.
John Hart, PhD, professor of ethics at Boston University School of Theology, will present a lecture entitled "St. Francis in the 21st Century: Creation, Compassion and Community" Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room.

Lawrence Guyot, Civil Rights leader and former head of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, will give a lecture entitled "Organizing Freedom Summer" on Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Horan-O'Donnell Science Building, Room 107.
David J. Garrow, presidential distinguished professor at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia will speak on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room. His talk is entitled "Why the Movement Needed Martin Luther King Jr." Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Garrow is a preeminent historian of the Civil Rights Movement.

Creative Services Team Wins Four ADDY Awards
The Canisius College Department of Creative Services will be honored with three awards at Brainstorm’s fourth annual ADDY Awards on Friday, March 18 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
The projects receiving awards include the Canisius College viewbook, a poster for the Office of Admissions and the invitation series for Alumni Weekend. Linda Prinzi, associate director of creative services, served as the designer on the projects.

Five Faculty Share Summer Proposal Development Grants
Five Canisius faculty members share this year’s three Summer Proposal Development Grants (SPDG). The $5,000 grants are intended to support faculty members who prepare proposals over the summer for external funding from government or private sources.
The successful faculty, names of summer proposals and expected sources are:
- Edward C. Kisailus, PhD, professor of biology; “Herbal Supplement Extract-Induced In Vivo Apoptosis of Tumor Cells in Scid Mice;” National Institutes of Health.
- John D. Occhipinti, PhD, associate professor of political science; “Center for Border Studies;” European Commission, U.S. Department of Education, NYS Department of Education, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and others.

Morris, Sheets Co-Author Article
Sara R. Morris, PhD, associate professor of biology and H. David Sheets, PhD, professor of physics, co-authored an article that was recently published in The Auk (the journal of the American Ornithologists’ Union). The article, entitled “Multiple Day Constancy as an Alternative to Pooling for Mark-Recapture Stopover Estimates for Neartic-Neotropical Landbirds” appears in the January issue.
Morris co-authored another article, entitled “A 30-year Study of Migrant Mortality at Two Television Towers in Western New York,” which will appear in the March issue of Wilson Bulletin (the journal of the Wilson Ornithological Society).
Canisius NYSP Student Wins National T-shirt Contest

Jon Lyons, assistant athletic facilities director and NYSP activities director, Michael-Dane Alexander, NYSP contest winner and Gordon Anthony, director of athletic facilities.
Michael-Dane Alexander, a student at City Honors and participant in the Canisius National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), won the NYSP’s 2004 National T-shirt Design Contest. Alexander’s drawing will be featured as the official NYSP logo for 2005 and will appear on NYSP participant t-shirts, applications, banners and other printed items. Jon Lyons, assistant athletic facilities director and NYSP activities director and Gordon Anthony, director of athletic facilities, were on hand on January 23-25 in Orlando, Florida when Alexander accepted his award.

Colquhoun Featured in National Magazine
A feature on Michael W. Colquhoun, PhD, adjunct professor of fine arts, was included in the February issue of Flute Talk magazine. Colquhoun is a freelance musician and composer, who specializes in Hispanic music. At Canisius, he teaches music theory, 20th century classical music and Afro-Centric and World Music.
