National Search Underway for New Men’s Basketball Head Coach
A national search is underway for a new men’s basketball head coach at Canisius.  Athletics Director Bill Maher announced that the college will not retain Mike MacDonald, who coached the Golden Griffins for nine consecutive seasons.

“Mike has been a superb ambassador for Canisius College and has made significant contributions to the school over his 18 years as a head and assistant coach,” said Maher.  “He has led our program with class and integrity and the young men in the program have reflected that on a daily basis.  However, after considerable evaluation and reflection, I have determined that we have not made the progress we expected and that it is in the best interest of Canisius College and our men’s basketball program that we seek new leadership.”

MacDonald steps down with a record of 108-153, good for third on the school’s all-time win chart.  Canisius finished its 2005-2006 campaign with a 9-20 record and a 6-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference mark, which placed the Griffs ninth in the league.  It was the fifth straight season Canisius finished seventh or lower in the MAAC standings.  The highlight of MacDonald’s career at Canisius came in 2000-2001 when he guided the team to the sixth 20-win season in school history (20-11) and a berth in the MAAC Tournament Championship.   For more information, click here.

Canisius Accounting Students Rank in Top Tier on State CPA Exam

The Canisius College Accounting Program has earned high marks from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, in relation to passing rates on the New York State 2004 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam.

According to the association, Canisius College undergraduate accounting majors who sat for the CPA Exam, during the 2004 exam cycle, had the highest percentage passing rates in all four subject areas and overall for schools with 10 or more candidates.  The five categories are: financial accounting and reporting; auditing; regulation; business environment and concepts; and all sections passed.  Canisius College had 17 undergraduate accounting majors sit for the CPA Exam during the 2004 exam cycle.

“The Accounting Department at Canisius College is very proud of its graduates,” said Ian J. Redpath, JD, LLM, chair of the Accounting Department.  “These results continue the long tradition of excellence of our graduates and are an exclamation point to the quality of an accounting education at Canisius – where leaders truly are made.”

For all New York State schools, regardless of the number of candidates, Canisius ranked number one in three of the five categories (financial accounting and reporting, auditing, and all sections); second in the category of business environment and concepts; and third in the regulation exam category.
