Instone is New Associate Dean

Dean of Arts and Sciences Paula M. McNutt, PhD, has announced that Debra Instone, PhD, will assume the role of associate dean of arts and sciences, effective August 15.  Instone was previously assistant professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) and also served as an adjunct professor at Canisius College since 1988. This position was added to meet the demands of the growing student enrollment at Canisius and to help manage outcomes assessements. She joins Barbara J. Porter, PhD, associate dean of arts of sciences.

In her role as associate dean, Instone will be responsible for the academic activities of students in the College of Arts and Sciences. She will advise students, including incoming freshman, transfer students and those on academic probation, and evaluate the academic records of all arts and sciences students. Instone will work with arts and sciences department chairs on course schedules each semester, as well as manage course enrollment. In addition, she will assist with the coordination of outcomes assessment for the College of Arts and Sciences and develop First-Year Experience programs.

“I am delighted that Dr. Instone has accepted the position of associate dean,” said Paula M. McNutt, PhD, dean of arts and sciences.   “While many Canisius faculty and students already know her as an adjunct professor in the psychology department, we are now fortunate to benefit from the combination of her teaching, advising and consulting experience in her role as associate dean. I am confident that she will be a great asset to the College of Arts and Sciences and to the college as a whole.”

Instone has nearly three decades of teaching experience at the college level. She has published numerous journal articles related to applied psychology, and has actively presented at academic conferences and participated in peer-review services for journals and conferences. In addition, Instone has extensive experience as an organizational consultant to school districts, non-profit organizations, hospitals, businesses and government agencies.

Instone holds a PhD in psychology with a specialization in organizational analysis from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and education from Ohio University.
