Canisius College and Father Cooke are Top Leaders

The word is out - Canisius College is not only where leaders are made but a Buffalo News survey of Western New York leaders also confirms that the college and Father Cooke are top leaders in the Buffalo Niagara Region.

As part of a six-month study of Buffalo's leadership, its effectiveness and its future, The Buffalo News conducted a mail survey of 317 leaders in Erie and Niagara counties; the results ranked Canisius College number two under leading institutions and Father Cooke number two under civic leaders for positive effect and power in the Western New York community.

Imagine Canisius Earns Prestigious Award
Kudos to the college's Imagine Canisius, capital campaign, which was recently awarded top honors at the Jesuit Advancement Administrators conference in New Orleans.   The campaign was submitted by the College Relations Division in the Development Awards and won first place for its tremendous accomplishments.  The entry reported the outstanding results of the capital campaign and made a strong case for how its success has transformed the college.

The Imagine Canisius capital campaign was the largest in the college's 130-year history and concluded on June 30, 2000 with $38.8 million raised, surpassing the college's campaign goal by $8.8 million.

Alumnus Awarded Visiting Oishei Professorship
This fall Canisius welcomes back Nelson D. Civello '67, who was recently awarded the Visiting Oishei Professorship for the 2001-2002 academic year.  Nelson returns to his alma mater where he will design and teach new courses in the Finance Department, which focus on the U.S. financial services industry.  He will also work to enhance the college's reputation in the community by further developing ties between the department and the financial services community.

The Oishei Professors Program was created through funding by the John R. Oishei Foundation in 1998 to provide the college's best teachers with the resources to create innovative and effective teaching and learning styles.   A total of nine, three-year Oishei Professorships have been awarded to faculty members.  The Oishei Professors Program also funds an outstanding visiting educator to the college each year for three years.  Nelson is Canisius' third Visiting Oishei Professor.

Canisius Offers Bioinformatics Undergraduate Degree
Canisius adds a new four-year major in bioinformatics, providing students with an education that places them on the cutting-edge of science and technology.  Dr. Paula Dehn, chair of the Biology Department, and Dr. Jeff McConnell, chair of the Computer Science Department, were instrumental in establishing the state-of-the-art bioinformatics program at Canisius, making it the first undergraduate program of its kind in Western New York and one of only a few such programs across the country.

Bioinformatics, which begins this fall, offers students an opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in a highly interdisciplinary field that combines biology, mathematics and computer information science.  Unlike the more narrow field of biomedical computing, bioinformatics applies to all aspects of biological study including genetics, ecology, evolutionary biology, epidemiology and structural biology.   Debra Burhans will join the faculty in September to teach bioinformatics.

The program is funded, in part, by a grant in the amount of $178,286.00 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
