Canisius PR Receives PRSA Silver Excalibur Award
The Canisius Office of Public Relations was honored at the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) 16th annual Excalibur awards dinner on June 23.  Eileen C. Herbert, associate director of public relations and Debra S. Park, director of public relations, won a Silver Excalibur Award for the public relations program which successfully promoted Dr. Bruce Dierenfield’s Canisius College Program in the African American Experience.

Siegrist is New HR Director
Canisius welcomed Deborah Siegrist, the new director of human resources, to campus on June 20.  Siegrist takes over the position formerly held by E. Joyce Eulner, who retired from Canisius after 46 years of service in spring 2004.
 
Siegrist has 19 years of diverse human resources experience at Outokumpu American Brass.   She holds a bachelor’s degree from Niagara University and a master’s degree in human resources from the University of Kansas. 

Many thanks to Constance Trowbridge, associate director of human resources, for her great work as acting director this past year.

Sammarco is New Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations
Erica Sammarco '00 is the new director of corporate and foundation relations.

Prior to coming to Canisius, Sammarco managed proposal writing for URS Engineering and served as a grant writer with Lucy Curley and Co. in Buffalo.

In addition to her bachelor’s degree from Canisius, she also holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Rochester.  Her office will be on the first floor of 23 Agassiz Circle, the new offices for the College Relations Division.   

Coward is New Director of Center for Teaching Excellence
Patricia Coward, PhD, is the new director of Canisius’ Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE).  Prior to Canisius, Coward was a member of the English department and served as director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Frostburg State University in Maryland. She has also held positions at State University College of New York at Oswego as a tutor and adjunct instructor and at Wayne State College in Nebraska where she directed the Teaching and Learning Center.

Coward holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the State University College of New York at Fredonia, and a Ph.D. in American literature and rhetoric and composition from Bowling Green State University.  In her role as CTE director, she will continue to offer faculty development opportunities on a range of topics, including assessment, teaching techniques, technology in teaching, and other subjects relating to faculty life.

Wegrzyn is New Assistant Director of Alumni Relations
Marisa Wegrzyn '00
is the new assistant director of alumni relations. She comes to Canisius from the Roswell Park Alliance where she served as Senior Special Events Coordinator for two years.  Wegrzyn holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Canisius College. 

Maciejewski is New Designer in Creative Services
Shaun Maciejewski has joined the creative services team in the newly created position of graphic designer.  He comes to Canisius from Quinlan and Co., an agency in Amherst, where he served as production manager and designer.   Maciejewski has also worked for FB Portable Displays and Merill-Northwind, a pre-press production house.

He holds an associates degree in graphic design from Villa Maria College and a bachelor’s degree in communication design with a minor in art history from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Student Center Office Now Office of Event Management

The Student Center Office has been renamed the Office of Event Management.  As of August 1, in addition to the facilities already booked by this Office, Lyons Hall 118 and the library conference room will also be booked by the Office of Event Management at Ext. 2180.  Mike Odojewski is now assistant director of event management, Mark Dzielski, is full-time event coordinator, and Claudia Hojnacki is the secretary/technician for events management.

In addition, the Office of Student Affairs announces the following staff changes:

 
Kathy Berger Mark Piatkowski '01
Mark Piatkowski '01
is the new assistant director of residence life.  He comes to Canisius from SUNY Brockport.  Piatkowski holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and sociology from Canisius College.

Kathy Berger, disability specialist/testing coordinator, previously part-time, is now full time.

Karin Tonkin is a counselor in the counseling center. She is completing her doctorate in clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University.

Elephas Maximus DVD Wins Three Awards
Michael Noonan, PhD, professor of biology/psychology, is the winner of three national awards for his most recent video documentary, Elephas Maximus: The biology and conservation of the Asian elephant.  It was a finalist in the 2005 Telly Awards (education category).  It received an award of distinction at the 2005 Videographer Awards (education category).  And it won a gold Aurora Award for Issues Awareness, in the documentary category for nature/environment. 

Noonan wrote, directed and produced Elephas Maximus.  The documentary was videotaped by Erik T. Michaelsen and edited by Nathan A. Johnson, both of the Canisius College Media Center.  Congratulations to all who contributed to this project.

Canisius Faculty Contribute to Encyclopedia of New York State
Five Canisius College professors can count themselves among the contributors to one of the most complete documents ever to be published about New York State, in a half century. The Encyclopedia of New York State includes nearly 2000 pages and 4000 signed entries that capture the impressive complexity of the Empire State as a historic crossroads of people and ideas. 

Those faculty who authored entries in the manuscript include: Rev. Edward T. Dunn, S.J., professor of history (Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway and Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad); Peter J. Galie, PhD, chair of political science (Rights of New Yorkers, Constitutions & Constitutional Conventions, Libel and John Zenger); Eric L. Gansworth, associate professor of English (American Indians in Literature); Robert A. Klump, adjunct professor of political science (Charles Evans Hughes); and Howard R. Stanger, PhD, associate professor of management/marketing (The Larkin Company). 

Millane Rusk Honored with Award of Excellence
Maureen Millane Rusk, associate dean of external business programs, received an Award of Excellence from the Every Women Opportunity Center, which recognized Rusk for being a “role model, risk taker and pathfinder.”   Rusk accepted her award at the center’s 21st annual awards dinner on May 5. Everywoman Opportunity Center is a not-for-profit corporation which helps women achieve personal and economic self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to career/life planning.  

Burke Earns M.S. in Elementary Education 
Kate E. Burke, officer for public safety, graduated in May with an M.S. in elementary education.

2005 Corporate Challenge
