Residence Life Moves to Eastwood Hall

The finishing touches are being put on the new Office of Residence Life in Eastwood Hall.

The Canisius College Office of Residence Life is in its new home in Eastwood Hall, located on the tunnel level.  The new office provides more space than the Bosch Hall offices and accommodates the office’s growing staff, which is needed to meet the demands of the college’s increasing resident population.

Eastwood Residence Hall will be home to 270 freshman and sophomore students when it opens in a few short weeks.  The seven-story building is substantially complete. The walls are painted; the floors are carpeted; the windows are decorated with blinds and valances; and lighting, showers, and toilet facilities are in place.

Each floor of Eastwood Hall also has a lounge with a community kitchen and coin-free laundry facilities.

Like all the college’s residence halls, Eastwood is air conditioned, and wired for local phone service, cable TV and Internet access.  It includes tunnel access to Old Main and the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center.

Through the end of the month, furniture will be put in place and the contractors will continue to “commission” the building (test the fire alarm and sprinkler, heating and cooling, and plumbing and electrical systems). Site work and landscaping associated with the new dormitory project will be completed in August. Eastwood Hall opens August 10 to student leaders and athletes. The remaining student body arrives August 27 for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Eastwood Hall will be included on the third annual Welcome to Historic Hamlin Park Home & Garden Tour on Saturday, August 13.  Canisius students will provdie tours of the new residence from 11 am - 1 pm.  Refreshments will be served.

For more information about the Hamlin Park Tour, contact Rita Hubbard-Robinson at 881-1727.

College Relations Move Makes Room for Faculty

In an effort to create more space for faculty offices, members of the College Relations team have moved to 23 Agassiz Circle.  Canisius purchased the house on Agassiz Circle this past spring from the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The offices of College Relations, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Development and Special Counsel to the president have settled into their new space on the first floor.  You can find Development Services, Campaigns for Canisius and Endowed Scholarships on the second floor, and Development Officers Mary Cosgrove and Dianna Civello on the third floor.  Click here to search the on-line campus directory for all new telephone extensions at Agassiz.

“Everything about the move has been positive,” says Betsy Bohen, manager of prospect research.  “It’s a nice location near the park, the office space is bright and open and parking is very convenient.”

Still remaining on the second floor of Lyons Hall is the Office of Public Relations.  The Departments of Annual Fund and Alumni Relations also remain on the second floor but have moved into the space vacated by development and college relations.  Telephone extensions for those remaining in Lyons Hall remain the same.

Peter J. Galie, PhD, chair of political science, unpacks a box of files in his department’s new office space in Lyons Hall.

Members of the Political Science Department moved into space vacated by Annual Fund and Alumni Relations.  Sandy Estanek, PhD, assistant professor of college student personnel will also have an office in the suite.  Political science and college student personnel phone extensions will remain the same.

“Our new space here in Lyons Hall is commensurate with the highly professional level of the political science department,” says Peter J. Galie, chair of Political Science.  “We now have space for students to take exams, a reception area for students and parents, and attractive meeting space to conduct media interviews.”

Both the Political Science and College Relations offices will host open houses after school resumes in the fall.  Watch the Netgazette for details.  To get to 23 Agassiz Circle from the main campus, travel east down Main Street to the light at Humboldt Parkway.  Turn left onto Humboldt until Agassiz Circle just past Woodward Avenue.  Turn right into the parking lot.

Feedback Needed for New Web Designs
The Web office is seeking feedback on new designs for the college’s Web site.  The two comps were designed by LiquidMatrix and include initial direction from the Office of Public Relations, Creative Services and Web Services; Enrollment Management and the Admissions office.

The home page and sub page of Comps A and B are posted here.  Make sure you complete the survey found on that page.  All submitted comments will be reviewed and used to select a final design which is tentatively scheduled for implementation in October.  The deadline for feedback is July 31.

Annual Fund Celebrates Successful Campaign

John P. Rumschik, chair of the Canisius College Annual Fund Cabinet, presents President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., with a check for $2,153,381.87 at the Annual Fund celebration on June 29.

The 2005-2006 annual fund is underway with a goal of $2.140 million. The campaign ends May 31, 2006.  Congratulations to Amy Johnson, director of the annual fund, and Kirsten Reppert, assistant director of the annual fund
