Library Open House
The theme for the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library Open House is “Get to Know Buffalo and the Canisius College Library.” Students, faculty and staff will be treated to an afternoon of fun, food and information. Come and see some of the great changes and new services in the library and learn some wonderful things about the city of Buffalo. The Open House will take place on Friday, September 21, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Local writer and entrepreneur Mark Goldman will speak about his new book, City On The Edge: Buffalo, NY (Prometheus Books, 2007) at 3 p.m. The event, sponsored by the library, is free and open to the public. You are welcome to attend whether or not you have read the book, however if you wish to read it ahead of time, the library has five copies, it is available through amazon.com or locally from Talking Leaves Books.

Mark Goldman came to Buffalo from New York City in 1967 to study history at the University of Buffalo. In 1973, he received his doctorate in urban history and wrote his dissertation about the history of Black Rock. In 1988, he bought the Calumet Building on Chippewa Street and two years later he opened the Calumet Arts Cafe. His work there was instrumental in the revitalization of that part of downtown. Four years ago, he opened the Allen Street Hardware Cafe, which has had an equally stimulating impact on Allentown.

Goldman’s third book on the history of Buffalo, City On The Edge, is a comprehensive history of Buffalo, NY’s past century. It spans more than 100 years from the Pan Am Exhibition of 1901 to the present day, including the 2006 ice storm and a scathing (and sure to be controversial) critique of the on-going deal to bring casino gambling to the city of Buffalo, NY.  Look for more information on the library Web site.

Media Center Provides Laptops for On-Campus Events
This past summer, ITS and the Media Center purchased two Windows laptops for use by faculty and staff during on-campus events. In order to use one of these laptops, simply request a Media Center event laptop along with the rest of your media (LCD projector, screen, etc.) when scheduling your event with the Office of Event Management ( Ext 2180). When you arrive at your event space, you’ll find the laptop secured to a podium and already connected.

This new service offered by the Media Center will help alleviate the hassle of having to bring your own laptop and connect it. Simply bring your files on a USB drive, CD or access them through the campus network, load the presentation and you’re ready to go!

This is a trial program being offered by the Media Center and the laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They will be available for use Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. If both are already scheduled on the day of your event, you can still contact the Center for Teaching Excellence at Ext. 3720 to reserve a laptop.

To find out more about these laptops, visit the Media Center Event Support Web page.

Archives Reception for Dr. Lorch
Canisius College Archives & Special Collections celebrates Archives Month with a reception to honor I. Joan Lorch, PhD, professor emerita of biology upon the publication of her memoir Chance and Choice: My First Thirty Years.

The event will take place on Friday, October 5, from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. on the second floor of the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.  Faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Cake and coffee will be served. Please RSVP to Ext. 2530 by October 2.

In 1974, Professor Lorch advocated for the introduction of Women’s Studies courses to the curriculum. Through her work, and that of the Women’s Studies Committee, Canisius adopted a Women’s Studies Certificate Program in 1991.
