Canisius College Accounting Program Receives National and State Rankings
The numbers tell the story for the Canisius College Accounting Program, which earned high marks on national and state rankings recently released by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant (AICPA) and National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). Based on graduate and undergraduate first-time takers of the November 2002 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam, the rankings report the performance by school on all four parts of the exam.
Canisius College accounting graduates holding graduate degrees had the third highest passing rate in the nation on the business law & professional responsibilities (LPR) portion of the exam. They were also ranked on the audit portion, as having the fifth highest passing rate in the nation.
In New York State, Canisius College accounting students without advanced degrees had the highest passing rate in the state on the auditing portion of the exam; the second highest passing rate on the financial accounting & reporting – business enterprises section; and the fourth highest passing rate in the state on the accounting & reporting –other areas portion. Canisius students had the second highest overall pass rate in New York State on all four parts of the exam.
“The Accounting Department at Canisius College is very proud of its graduates,” said Dr. Ian J. Redpath, chair of the Accounting Department. “These recognitions further emphasize the continued high quality of an accounting education at Canisius.” Dr. Antone F. Alber, dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, added, “These results reaffirm that students, who plan to pursue accounting as a career, are best served by choosing Canisius for their college education.”

This past spring, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) also recognized two Canisius College accounting graduates for outstanding achievement on the November 2002 CPA Exam. Mary R. Packman ’02, of KPMG and Mark A. Zogaria ’02, of Tronconi Segarra & Horre LLP, were (respectively) presented with the society’s gold and silver Charles Waldo Haskins Memorial Award at the organization’s annual dinner in New York City. Packman earned the highest composite score on the statewide CPA Exam; Zogaria earned the second highest composite score. This is an unprecedented accomplishment for any college.
Canisius and the BPO Mark a Milestone
The long-standing tradition between the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius College marks a milestone this year – 25 years of collaboration that brings the world-renown orchestra to the college community. The season kicks off on October 1 when the BPO performs with the Canisius College Chorale and the choir of Blessed Sacrament Church, under the direction of BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta, at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.
In 1978, the late Edith DeLuca, professor of music and assistant to the dean for cultural affairs, established “The BPO Goes to College,” a unique and unprecedented concert series that brought members of the BPO to campus to perform. Now called “Canisius and the BPO Connection,” the series also includes the popular Informally Formal chamber concerts, where guests sit at tables and enjoy coffee and dessert during the performances. The intimate setting also gives audience members the opportunity to interact with musicians during the intermission.
"When the BPO Goes to College series began in 1978, this was the first time the orchestra performed on a college campus," said Jane Cary, director of music and coordinator of ArtsCanisius. "I'm thrilled that Canisius is celebrating its 25-year association with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and continuing this outstanding tradition of bringing these unique perfomances to the college and community."
The season concludes in April with “Canisius Night at Kleinhans,” when the Canisius College Chamber Orchestra performs in the Mary Seaton Room prior to the BPO concert. Tickets can be purchased for the entire series or for individual performances. For a complete schedule or ticket information, call the Fine Arts Office at Ext. 2542 or visit the Web site here.
