Franklin Barnwell, Housekeeper for Facilities Management
Franklin (“Frank”) Barnwell, housekeeper for facilities management (first shift), says that while jobs can have their ups and downs, he sees his as a blessing from God. “If you put God first in your life, you learn respect for others and respect for what you do,” he says.
Barnwell started at Canisius in 1998 in the Wehle Technology Center. He soon moved to the Frisch Residence Hall, which has since been his primary assignment. Barnwell welcomes the opportunity to interact with students on a daily basis. “I have a good rapport with many of the students,” says Barnwell. “Even after they move out, they will see me in the hallways and it’s like we’re old friends,” he adds.
When Barnwell cleans Frisch Hall (or any building on campus), he tries to give only the highest quality of service – a level he would want for his family or good friends.
“People invest a lot of money in their children’s education, so they deserve the best.” says Barnwell. “I have two daughters so I can relate as a parent. I try to give a little bit extra.”
That “extra” includes lending a listening ear to students on occasion. Students notice Barnwell’s effort, and thank him verbally, or through cards and notes. “One said, thank you for smiling,” he said. “I didn’t realize even my smile made a difference to them!”
Barnwell also makes a difference with the youth in his church, Calvary Chapel in Elma. Barnwell has a youth ministry and helps coordinate the church’s productions. As part of this, Barnwell makes elaborate costumes out of cardboard, felt, a glue gun and whatever he can find!
“God showed me that I could use my art to teach about Him,” says Barnwell. “But I am also happy when people crack up and say, ‘How did you make that?!’” he says with a laugh.
Barnwell lives in Buffalo with wife, Antoinette, ’93 and daughters Julia, 12, and Kayla, five. He says his first priority is spending time with his family.
