Canisius College Named a "Catholic College of Distinction"

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius College is a 2012 “Catholic College of Distinction,” according to the annual Colleges of Distinction guidebook. Each year, the publication identifies 200 or more colleges and universities that excel at “the pillars of a strong and active undergraduate education.” Criteria for the “College of Distinction” recognition includes the ways in which undergraduate institutions engage students, provide outstanding teaching, offer vibrant communities, and produce successful outcomes.

The Colleges of Distinction guidebook recognized Canisius College for providing real-world opportunities to undergraduates through research, participation in major scholarly conferences, internships, service-learning and service trips, and study abroad experiences. The publication also recognized Canisius for its small class sizes, its student-faculty ratio (11:1), and its “remarkably visionary, inventive and innovative professors” whose courses include the Holocaust in History, the Native American Experience, and Christianity and the Road Less Traveled. The guidebook also acknowledged Canisius’ successful outcomes. Among other outcomes, it cites that 92 percent of graduates are employed in their fields of choice; nine out of 10 biology majors are accepted into graduate and professional schools, and the college’s Accounting Department maintains outstanding CPA pass rates in New York State and nationwide.

Colleges of Distinction assists high school students and parents identify colleges that suit individual personalities and career objectives. Because the majority of college-bound teenagers do not attend the elite, name-brand institutions found on commercial rankings lists, the Colleges of Distinction guidebook highlights four-year institutions that are considered "hidden gems." Colleges and universities are nominated as colleges of distinction by high school college counselors. Publishers then utilize qualitative and quantitative information about those schools, and conduct interviews and college visits to make their final determinations.
