CANISIUS NAMED A MILITARY FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY

BUFFALO, NY Canisius College earned a place in the 2013 Guide to Military Friendly Colleges & Universities, just released by Military Advanced Education (MAE).  MAE’s guide provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to implement military-friendly policies in support of men and women in uniform.

Among the attributes considered in evaluating this year’s institutions for inclusion in MAE’s guide are the flexibility of online learning options, the extent of transfer credits accepted by degree level, on-campus ROTC, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, support provided to families of servicemembers, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, presence on military installations, and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.

“The guide has become an invaluable tool for both education services officers (ESOs) and transition officers (TOs) when advising servicemembers and their families about degree and certification opportunities currently available from institutions of higher learning,” says Laural Hobbes, editor of the Military Advanced Education Guide

Canisius College instituted an Office of Veterans Services to meet the needs of a growing veteran student population, which has more than doubled at Canisius since 2007.  The Veterans Services Office provides academic, disability, career and social support for these non-traditional students, as well as a veterans lounge where students can go to study, relax and socialize with other veterans.

Military Advanced Education serves ESOs and TOs at every U.S. military installation, along with the servicemembers they counsel.  Published 10 times a year, MAE’s editorial coverage includes exclusive interviews with military executive leadership, educators and members of Congress; best practices; career and transition spotlights; servicemember, school and program profiles; and periodic special reports.

In addition to this recent designation, G.I. Jobs magazine has recognized Canisius College on its Military Friendly School list for three consecutive years.

One of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York.
