African American Experience Hosts Karima Amin
Professional storyteller from Buffalo a founding member of “Spin-A-Story Tellers,” a group that promotes the art of storytelling

Buffalo, NY - The Canisius College Program in the African American Experience will welcome professional storyteller Karima Amin to the campus on Monday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Room 225. The event is free and open to the public.
A native of Buffalo, Amin is one of the founding members of “Spin-A-Story Tellers,” a group that promotes the art of storytelling in Western New York. She has been an educator in the Buffalo Public Schools for more than 24 years and utilizes storytelling as a teaching tool to enhance language arts skills, connect literature with social studies, increase multicultural awareness, and teach about the history and culture of African and African American people. She also shares both original and traditional tales on local radio station 93.7 WBLK-FM every Monday morning at 8:15 a.m.
She is the author of several books including,
The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends, a children's book, published by Dorling Kindersley of London, England (1999). Her folktale re-tellings of
Wiley and the Hairy Man and
The Legend of Annie Christmas have been published in
African American Children's Stories: A Treasury of Tradition and Pride, an anthology of stories, songs and biographies (Publications International 2001). Two of her original stories,
Grandma's Garden and
The Prettiest Picture, have been published in
My First Treasury: Grandma Loves You, a board book for young children ages 0-6 (Publications International 2003).
Amin holds a BA in English/secondary education (1969) and a Med in urban education/curriculum development (1974) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Karima Amin's biography appears in

The lecture is made possible through the Canisius College Program in the African American Experience, which was developed by Dr. Bruce Dierenfield, professor of history, through his Peter Canisius Distinguished Teaching Professorship. The professorship is funded by Canisius College and the John R. Oishei Foundation.
