BUFFALO, NY − John K. Castle, chairman and chief executive officer of Castle Harlan Inc., will address the Canisius College Class of 2004 during graduate commencement ceremonies on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Koessler Athletic Center. There are approximately 600 members of the Class of 2004. Castle will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony.

In 1986, Castle formed Castle Harlan Inc., a private merchant bank that manages more than $30 billion in assets. He was previously president and chief executive officer of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette Inc. (DLJ), one of Wall Street’s largest investment banks. At that time, he also served as a director of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S.

In 1969, as chairman of DLJ’s Merchant Banking and Sprout Group, Castle was one of the founders of the institutionalization of the private equity business utilizing limited partnerships as a vehicle for pension funds and other large capital sources to invest.

Castle has owned or controlled such companies as Delaware Management, the seventh largest independent money manager in the United States; Ethan Allen, furniture manufacturer and retailer; Truck Components Inc., a leading supplier of heavy duty truck components; INDSPEC Chemical Corporation, the world’s largest producer of resorcinol; Envirotech, once the world’s largest water pollution control company; and Sealed Air Corporation, maker of plastic bubble packaging material.

He has been elected to serve three, five-year terms as a trustee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served for 22 years as a trustee of New York Medical College, including 11 years as chairman of the board. He is a member of the board of The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and was the founding chairman of the Whitehead Board of Associates. He is also a member of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Board of Trustees, the University Visiting Committee for The Harvard Business School and chairman of the Columbia-Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Council.

Castle has also published his own books related to family health, including America’s Top Doctors and New York’s Top Doctors.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA as a Baker Scholar with high distinction from Harvard and an honorary doctorate of humane letters from New York Medical College.
