BUFFALO, NY - The Canisius College Center for the Global Study of Religion presents its Conversations in Christ & Culture lecture series for spring 2005. Conversations in Christ & Culture is an ecumenical lecture, workshop and conference series designed to expose the local Christian community to internationally known speakers. Its purpose is to foster conversations about important issues involving the relationship between Christianity and culture, and to promote cooperation and understanding across religious, gender and ethnic issues.
The events, which are free and open to the public, begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center, located on Hughes Street. The following lectures are scheduled for April 2005:
Thursday, April 14 – Lamin Sanneh, PhD, the D. Willis James Professor of Missions and World Christianity at Yale University, will present a lecture entitled “Christianity Outside the West.” Raised a Muslim, Sanneh later converted to Christianity and is a practicing Roman Catholic. He has since authored numerous books on the subject of Muslim-Christian relations and world Christianity, and is currently editor-at-large of the well known Christian Century magazine. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Sanneh is a native of Nyanchos, an ancient African royal house in West Africa. He received his PhD in Islamic history at the University of London and was a professor at Harvard University for eight years, before beginning his work at Yale.
Thursday, April 21 – John Hart, PhD, professor of ethics at Boston University School of Theology, will present a lecture entitled “St. Francis in the 21st Century: Creation, Compassion and Community.” Well known for his work on ethics and environmental issues, Hart has lectured on the subject in more than 20 states and six countries. He is the author of Ethics and Theology: Innovation and Transformation in Community Contexts and The Spirit of the Earth – A Theology of the Land. In 1979, Hard wrote the draft of John Paul II’s homily on land stewardship, which was presented at the Living History Farms near Des Moines, Iowa.
