Ned Regan To Address Graduate Class Of 2005

Former Erie County executive and New York State comptroller to speak to approximately 605 graduates

BUFFALO, NY – The Hon. Edward V. Regan, former Erie County executive and New York State comptroller, will address the Canisius College graduate class of 2005 during commencement ceremonies on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the college’s Koessler Athletic Center on Main Street. Approximately 605 graduate degrees will be conferred at this time. Regan will also be presented with an honorary degree.

A renowned fiscal watchdog, Regan served as Erie County Executive from 1971 to 1978 before becoming a four-term comptroller for New York State. During his tenure, he reformed defective accounting, financial reporting and borrowing systems; developed corporate governance and performance analysis methods, which now serve as benchmarks for fiscal managers throughout the country; and led New York City out of its 1980 fiscal crisis. As sole trustee of the state’s pension fund, Regan’s prudent investments also resulted in the growth of the fund from $10 billion to $57 billion.

Regan resigned from public office in 1993 but continued to spearhead issues of responsible corporate governance. He chaired the Municipal Assistance Corporation, which monitors New York City’s finances and later generated public policy alternatives as a Fellow at Bard College’s Jerome Levy Economics Institute. Regan’s academic research coupled with his judicious fiscal convictions made him an ideal candidate for president of Baruch College, a title he assumed in July 2000.

Under Regan’s leadership, Baruch’s business school secured a ranking among the top 50 business schools in the country and grew to enroll the most diverse student body of any college in America. The hallmark of his presidency is the Center for Corporate Integrity, which Regan founded at Baruch in the wake of the 2001 corporate and auditing scandals. Established to strengthen the American economy through discourse, education and research, the Center for Corporate Integrity aims to promote greater awareness of the fiduciary and ethical obligations among the many participants in the economic system.

Regan ended his tenure as Baruch president in 2004 but remains a forceful advocate for responsible corporate governance as a professor within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. He is a trustee for the Financial Accounting Foundation, which selects members to serve on the boards for Financial and Governmental Accounting Standards. He also writes and speaks extensively on the development of accounting standards, public infrastructure financing and other corporate governance issues.
Regan earned a BA in economics from Hobart College in 1952 and a JD from the University at Buffalo in 1964.

Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to pursue and promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.
