Canisius Community Embraces Louisiana Students
Undergraduate Student Association, other Canisius organizations make various relief efforts
The Undergraduate Student Association (USA) is collecting winter clothing for the 24 Louisiana students who are now enrolled at the college following Hurricane Katrina. If you have new coats, hats, or gloves you would like to donate, contact the Undergraduate Student Association at 888-5252.
In addition, USA passed out welcome kits to each of the Louisiana students and organized a fundraiser to help all their fellow Jesuit students from Loyola New Orleans. The group will match every cent that is raised through the Canisius Cares Campaign, up to $5,000. The drive will run until September 30 and proceeds will be sent directly to the student government at Loyola New Orleans.
The group’s efforts also attracted the local media. Canisius senior, Luigi Rodo, vice president for business and finance for USA, and Louisiana senior, Patrick Enloe, were featured in a news story on WGRZ-TV’s Daybreak show on September 22.
Like many of the Louisiana students at the college, Patrick Enloe was due to start the fall semester at Loyola University in New Orleans. Even though he had never been to Buffalo, he chose Canisius because continuing his studies at a Jesuit institution was a high priority. And now that he’s here, he says he will never forget the city that became his new home…even if it was just for a while.
“The community has definitely stepped up and met, actually exceeded any expectation I ever had,” says Enloe.
Other Canisius fundraisers include the sale of red wrist bands by the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Funds raised will also be sent to the student government at Loyola New Orleans. The wristbands are $2 each and include the words “Respond, Relieve, Recovery, Rebuild, Remember.”
Canisius resident students, Circle K, Campus Ministry, Students for Life, and the college’s Student Senate have organized a returnable can drive. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.
The college’s athletic coaches have joined forced with coaches from around the country to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The proceeds from an on-line sports auction on eBay will go directly to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that builds homes for low income families. Canisius basketball coaches Mike MacDonald and Terry Zeh have already donated items.
Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to pursue and promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.
