Canisius One Of Top Fulbright Scholarship Schools

Tied for fifth in rankings by The Chronicle of Higher Education

BUFFALO, NY -- Canisius College tied for fifth in the nation, among master’s institutions, for its number of J. William Fulbright Scholarship recipients for 2007-2008. The Fulbright Program recently announced the rankings, which were published in the October 26 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of the students and many others at Canisius College, including our internationally-oriented faculty in the Department of Modern Languages, the International Student Programs Office, the All-College Honors Program and the Fulbright Committee,” said Scott A. Chadwick, PhD, vice president for academic affairs at Canisius College. “This collaborative effort assures high quality applications to the Fulbright Program.”

The following Canisius College students won Fulbright Awards for 2007-2008:

• Roseanne C. Schuster '07 conducts research at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) under the direction of Laurie Chan, PhD, professor of community health. Schuster investigates how indigenous communities have responded to the contamination of their traditional food sources.

• Elise A. Garvey ’07 explores the development of a response to human trafficking in the Ukraine on both the domestic and international levels.

• Melanie D. Horton '06 studies with the Garcia-Robles Binational Business Grant Program in Mexico. She investigates the role that culture plays in the Mexican workplace with the hope of improving Mexican-American business relations

Nancy J. Rosenbloom, PhD, professor of history, serves as chair of the Canisius College Fulbright committee.

The J. William Fulbright Scholarship is named for Senator J. William Fulbright and is the U.S. government’s premier scholarship program. It is designed to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges, which provides recipients with tuition, fees, travel and research funds for a full year. This year, nearly 1,500 U.S. students from more than 100 different fields were offered grants to study, teach English and conduct research in more than 125 different countries throughout the world through the Fulbright Program.
