Video Institute Premieres Documentary

Wednesday, June 18 at the Town Ballroom

The Canisius College Video Institute will premiere “Carvings for a Cause,” a documentary short, on Wednesday, June 18 at the Town Ballroom, 681 Main Street, in Buffalo.

Student producers Jesse Koch (DMA '08), Lauren Mariacher (COM '08) and Shannon McCabe (COM '09), worked under the direction of Barbara Irwin, Ph.D., Director of the Canisius College Video Institute, to create the documentary promoting “Carvings for a Cause,” a local not-for-profit organization that works to transform fallen trees from the October 2006 storm into 8 foot-tall wood carvings of famous individuals in Western New York’s history.

The premiere event, sponsored by Carvings for a Cause, begins at 6:00 pm and features food tastings from area restaurants including Ambrosia, Grille 620, J.P. Bullfeathers, Nektar, Tempo, Drew Cerza – Buffalo’s “Wing King," live music by Heard of Buffalo, and an auction of environmental-themed items and items related to the October 2006 storm, including wood bowls, wood carvings, photos of nature, and more. In addition, historical carvings will “come to life.” A theater troupe will act out the roles of Frank Lloyd Wright, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Teressa Bellisimo, among others.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $40 at the door or $30 presale, available at J.P. Bullfeathers (1010 Elmwood Ave.), Grille 620 – Holiday Inn (620 Delaware Ave.), the Town Ballroom box office, or www.tickets.com. For more information on this event, visit www.carvingsforacause.com

Funded in part by the John R. Oishei Foundation, the Canisius College Video Institute provides students with the opportunity to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that will benefit the college and the community at large. Students produce documentaries and promotional videos for local and international not-for-profit and service agencies that otherwise would not have the resources to tell their stories in this way.
